i wanna get rid of "the text you entered isn't an item in the list
well, i'd recommend fixing the combobox control, rather than "getting rid
of" the error message. presumably the application programmer wanted to limit the entry of blood types to *valid* blood types to make sure that vital information is correct for every patient. i would't want to be the patient needing blood when my record came up saying my blood type was SN+ instead of AB+ ! is the programmer available to fix the problem? if so, that would probably be your best course of action. if the combobox droplist is not returning any values to choose from, then my guess is that the RowSource has been compromised - perhaps a table link has been lost, for instance. if you've never used Access, you're getting in way over your head when you try to troubleshoot a working database - you can end up creating more (and worse) problems than you think you're fixing. if the programmer is not available, then i'd strongly urge you to get an experienced Access developer to look at the database *hands-on* to track down the problem and fix it. hth "please" wrote in message ... hi im temporarily managing data base of patients at a hospital its first time using ms access and it disturbs heck out of me i need to type in some blood type but it doesnt let me do that keeping saying "the text you entered isn't an item in the list" theres an arrow right next to the blank and theres not even any selection except a 'blank' i could change the selections by changing a row sources at properties - combo box but it came to be just random rows that is used for other documents and it doesnt even put them in saying "the text you entered isn't an item in the list" i tried chaning the data type to - memo, number, type , and even somthing wizard the blue arrow in a sky blue box still appears and i just wanna get rid of it and type whatever i want like A+ or AB+ stuff thank you for reading this and your comments |

i wanna get rid of "the text you entered isn't an item in the list

writes hi im temporarily managing data base of patients at a hospital its first time using ms access and it disturbs heck out of me i need to type in some blood type but it doesnt let me do that keeping saying "the text you entered isn't an item in the list" theres an arrow right next to the blank and theres not even any selection except a 'blank' That's a problem, because it means something is broken. At a guess you have a list box, the row-source is intended to be a table and the table is either empty or corrupted in some way. i could change the selections by changing a row sources at properties - combo box but it came to be just random rows that is used for other documents and it doesnt even put them in saying "the text you entered isn't an item in the list" It's also possible that you have deleted the row-source data. Assuming that the underlying data field is a string then your "Row Source Type" should be "Value List" and the "Row Source" should be a list of valid entries separated by semicolons. As in "A+";"AB+"B+"; .... That will give you a drop-down list so that the user can select the right one. You need to consider whether you will allow users to type a value into the field and whether users are required to enter a value. There may be a table of valid blood types in which case that table should be the row source. i tried chaning the data type to - memo, number, type , and even somthing wizard the blue arrow in a sky blue box still appears and i just wanna get rid of it and type whatever i want like A+ or AB+ stuff You can change the field type to string and change the control on the form into a text box. Bear in mind that changing the field type may destroy any data in that field in every record of the database. thank you for reading this and your comments I would strongly recommend that you a) restore the previous version of the database from a backup and b) make a copy of it and use that copy to experiment on. If the database had any records in it before you started then all of them may have been corrupted. There are online tutorials on Access database and form design, you need to complete some of them before you attempt to alter the design of any tables or forms. If the database you are working on holds clinical data there may be legal implications in letting an untrained developer work on it. Typing whatever you want could be over-rated ...
What should happen if you accidentally enter a blood type that doesn't exist (e.g., XX)?
