I am using a table in microsoft word (Office XP) for
some reason there appeared in each cell of my table a
symbol It looks like a small circle inside of a small
square. Does anyone know what this symbol means? Or how
I can get it outta my table? Thanks for any help

Interesting choice of anonym! ;-) What you're seeing is the table end-of-cell mark. The mark doesn't print, but AFAIK there is no way to turn off display of the end-of-cell mark in a table.

Hi, Greg. I just tried that, and it doesn't turn off the table
end-of-cell mark.

In ToolsOptionsView, there are (at least in my version) 6 choices for
viewing of formatting (non-printing) characters. If either 'Paragraph
marks' or 'All' is checked, end-of-cell and end-of-row markers will display.
So if you had everything checked on the View tab rather than just All, and
did CTRL+Shift+* (or clicked the toolbar button), you would still see these
because that command only toggles the 'All' setting without affecting the
other five.

Regards,
Chad

gno,

Do your pilcrow (paragraph marks) toggle off when you CTRL+Shift+* ? If no,
ToolsOptionsViewFormatting Marks and uncheck "Paragraph marks." End of
cell markers display is also dependent on this setting.

G'Day BitchKimmPossible,

Acknowledgements to previous contributors.....

In summary (for now):
Tools Options
View (Tab)
Formatting marks (Section half-way down)
Tab characters UNcheck
Spaces UNcheck
Paragraph Marks UNcheck
Hidden Text UNcheck
Optional hyphens UNcheck
All CHECK

Use CTRL+*, which is the same as CTRL+SHIFT+8, to
turn all these ON or OFF.

You can also use the "¶" button on the Standard toolbar.

Later on you can change the check boxes to taste.

Hi, Greg. You guessed it... I always run with spaces, tabs, and
paragraph marks visible, so Ctrl+Shift+* doesn't turn off the
end-of-cell marks for me. I didn't realize the paragraph marks were
related to the end-of-cell marks, but it does make sense now that you
mention it.
