Default help! table of contents problem

*This is a bit of a long question from a novice, here goes..documents
and templates that previously had no problems with their table of
contents, updating, etc. no longer update and their table of contents
have disappeared. I've had some of these doc's and templates for
years, so I've never had to create a toc from scratch. So, when the
problem appeared yesterday I tried creating toc from scratch and the
same thing happens to the new toc's I try to create.
I follow the "easy" instructions for creating a toc, but when I hit
F9 to update the field, nothing happens and the field remains as
follows toc\o"2-3"\h\zu\t "heading" (there are brackets at the
beginning of the string that I couldn't enter).
Stranger yet, I had copied the above string to insert in this message
and when I pasted it, instead of the string, the table of contents
appeared in this message box (see part of this below).

Does anybody have any idea what the heck is going on?

Not sure whether this is a question or not, but in any case the answer is to
press Alt+F9 to toggle field code display.
