Right at the very top of the scroll bar is a small bar.
If you put your cursor on it it will turn into two paralell
lines. Just drag this down to the row or rows you want to freeze.
there is also one at the right side of the bar that displays
the tabs. This one will freeze the column.

Easier way is to select the row below the bottom one you want to lock, go to
Window | Freeze pane

What you describe will Split the screen

And if you split the screen at the header line only. You essentially
get the same effect as Window | Freeze. Which one is easier would be
a matter of opinion.

Nope you still get the Split effect not a Freeze effect

I see the difference now. Splitting the screen allows you to scroll in
both portions of the screen while freezing simply locks the selected
rows or columns. For some reason I've always thought they did the same
thing so I always just used the split effect. Which I thought
was easier :-)

I hoped I might learn something new by asking, and instead I learned two
cool things. Thanks much to both of you, I can see uses for each
