You can rename the Data key (OldData) and Word will recreate a new data key,
if that is what you mean. You can try simply renaming the Toolbars sub-key to OldToolbars and just the toolbars key will rebuild, but as I indicated on my web page, the data key - particular in Word 2003 - is prone to minor corruptions. You can always rename the Settings sub key later if necessary. The worst that can happen from deleting any of these keys is that you will have to reconfigure your Word settings (tools options, autoformat as you type etc) and your built-in toolbar customizations when next you start Word. Word always replaces any of these keys with defaults if they are not present when Word is started. Note that it is better to create custom toolbars, which you can add to the toolbar area and which are stored in templates, than to edit the standard toolbars. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Carolyn in Texas wrote: If I delete the Data file, that deletes the Default, Settings and Toolbars, correct. Well, I did as you suggested, took a deep breath & deleted the data file. No
luck. I went back in and just deleted the Toolbars. Still no luck. So, I deleted the Data file yet again. Still no luck. Each time I did this, I re-booted my computer. Any other suggestions? -- Carolyn "Beth Melton" wrote: Sure, if you export the key first you can double-click the saved exported file and merge the deleted information back into your Registry. Do note, that the entire Word branch of the Registry is self-healing which means it will recreate anything that is missing the next time you start Word. Now, if you delete the entire Office branch the Windows Installer will likely appear and repair your installation but that's part of the self-healing process. So while there are some areas you need to be *very* careful in the Registry, the Word branch isn't one of those areas. :-) If you want to play it safe, just delete the Toolbars value instead of the entire Data key since that's actually where the corruption lies. You don't need to reboot, but Word does have to be closed while you delete

Did you make sure you exited Word and Outlook if using Word as your email
editor first? Note that you shouldn't need to reboot for the change to be made. If you verified that Word was not running at all then out of curiosity, is your title bar visible? (the one with the document name) If you don't see the title bar then do you see the File menu appear if you press Alt+F? If the File menu appears then you might want to adjust the height of your screen or the position -- I'd say the top edge is being cut off. Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Either space aliens have invaded my computer or I have a mega virus none of my "guards" can find. For some reason, the menu bar at the top of the Word page has disappeared. This line usually is just above the tool bars ( which also have vanished). The selections usually are File, View, Insert, etc. How can I retrieve this menu bar? I already have checked and tried all 4 "view" options at the bottom of the screen. The status bar at the bottom also is visible, as are my rulers. I have several major projects in process and this is slowing down tremendously. For example, how to you create a table using just the keyboard, since you don't have your command icons visible? WORD MENU
If Word (and Outlook) are closed you should delete any temporary files that
Windows will allow you to delete in the Temporary folders and in the document and template folders listed in the web link. You will not be able to delete temporary folders that are in use. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Carolyn in Texas wrote: OK, so I'm supposed to delete all files that begin with "~DF?" What about the Word files that begin with "~WR?" Do I delete those as well? You don't need to reboot, but Word does have to be closed while you delete the data key. Are you the only user of this PC? Are you deleting the key from your profile - though on reflection I suppose you must be.? Do the toolbars come back if you start Word in its safe mode (hold the CTRL key whilst starting Word)? If they do, then close Word, delete the Data key again then *before restarting Word*, see http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...peningWord.htm Rename the normal.dot template to oldnormal.dot (clue - it's a hidden file). Temporarily remove any add-ins. Repair Word from the *original installation disc*. Finally start Word. -- Graham Mayor - Word MVP My web site www.gmayor.com Word MVP web site http://word.mvps.org Carolyn in Texas wrote: I deleted the Data file, still no toolbars. I then tried deleting just the Toolbars. No luck. So, I deleted the "newly created" Data file. Still no toolbars. Each time I deleted files, I rebooted my computer. Any other suggestions? You can rename the Data key (OldData) and Word will recreate a new data key, if that is what you mean. That will not achieve anything - repair it.
