Default Server Application Error When Trying To Edit Graphs

garfield-n-odie,

I went back in to Norton AntiVirus to enable the Office plug-in. Then I ran
the regsvr32 /u command again. This time I was successful. I guess because
the Norton AntiVirus software had already disabled the officeav.dll, it could
not disable it twice.

The bad news is the problem with the graphs still persists.

garfield-n-odie,

I tried to unregister officeav.dll again. This time, I got the following
message:

DllUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
Antivirus\officeav.dll failed. Returned code: 0x8002801c

Do you know what that means?

Because there are spaces in the pathname, you need to include the
quotation marks:

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
AntiVirus\officeav.dll"

In your post, the closing quote mark looks like some sort of
extended ascii or unicode character that the Run command might
not recognize as a closing quote mark. If you're copying and
pasting the command into the Run box, then manually delete the
quotation marks and retype them.

garfield-n-odie,

I tried it both ways, with the quotation marks as shown in
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm and without. The run statements
I tried a

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton
AntiVirus\officeav.dll” and regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\Norton
SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\officeav.dll

Sounds like you're putting quotation marks someplace where they
don't belong in the Run command. Please quote the exact command
you're typing, and maybe we can get this sorted out. The
problems you're citing are classic symptoms of the Norton
Antivirus Office Plugin, and disabling the plugin usually solves
the problem.

garfield-n-odie,

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it with the actual path and I got the
message, "LoadLibrary(C:\Program") failed. The specify module cannot be
found."

In the Run window, type:

regsvr32 /u C:\Norton AntiVirus directory\officeav.dll

but replace "Norton AntiVirus directory" with the actual path to
your Norton AntiVirus directory.

I tried to disable the Norton AntiVirus plug-in using the Start|Run mode. I
searched for officeav.dll. I found it in the Norton AntiVirus directory. I
entered the following in the Run window: regsvr32 /u “\officeav.dll” The
computer responded with the following message: LoadLibrary (“\officeav.dll”)
failed. The specify module cannot be found.

I also re-registered MS Graph.

The problem still persists.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Ernie

Echo S,

I disable the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in via the software interface. I
will give the Start|Run approach a try.

Thanks,

Ernie

Did you disable the DLL via Start|Run, or did you just turn it off in the
software itself? I'd recommend turning it off and then disabling the DLL via
Start|Run, just to make sure.

Norton Anti-Virus and Office http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00387.htm
has instrux.

Echo S,

Thanks for the suggestions. I have already disabled the Norton AntiVirus
Office plug-in. I will reregister MS Graph next. All of the graphs on this
presentation were generated with MS Graph. I can edit some of graphs and
some of the graphs are even on the same slides.

"Echo S" wrote:

No, I don't. But I'd probably start with disabling the Norton AntiVirus
Office plug-in, if you use Norton/Symantec, and reregistering MS Graph.
Those are easy things to do, and they don't take a whole lot of effort or
mess anything up on the system.

Do you know why only some of the graphs would have this error?

Any ideas?

Default Server Application Error When Trying To Edit Graphs

Steve,

When you sent the test file back to me, there was a macro on it. What was
it for?

Other than Echo's suggestion (calling MS) you might also want to recreate the
graphs and keep the presentation exclusively on one platform or the other to see
if the problem repeats itself.

Steve and Echo S,

Unfortunately, when I tried the round tripping on the complete file, I was
not able to get rid of the error. I tried the round tripping technique with
PowerPoint 2000, PowerPoint 2003, and PowerPoint 2004 for Mac. In all cases,
when I opened the file in PowerPoint 2003, I still could not edit some of the
graphs.

Ernie sent me a test file, I couldn't sort out anything obviously wrong
with it
but roundtripped it and sent it back; now it works ok.

Great minds....

As I mentioned in email, it was just something I was testing another idea with. It
didn't do anything useful.

This may sound like a no brainer, but from experience, I can say, Verify MS
Graph is installed.

How do you verify it?
