Default How to have contacts with last name?

In the new Vista I am unable to get my contacts by their last name first and
then given name such as Smith, Jane. I have changed this in the tools option
but it doesn't seem to work.
Have I missed another step? Thank you. June.

Your operating system has nothing to do with this, so your "new Vista" is
not in play. State your Outlook version. State what view you are trying to
sort.
