Edward O'Brien was recently heard to
utter: Hi, Mary. I'm using a HP 950c Deskjet - USB - with the latest driver, downloaded quite recently. I generally keep everything well up to date. I am using that printer with Publisher 2003, and have A4 as my default paper size in Publisher. I'm running XP Home SP2 and, apart from a small screen resolution problem have had no other problems. The whole thing is a complete mystery to me. I'm quite surprised there is no simple selection for a default paper setting the same as in MS Word. You mentioned that before - it's just the way that Publisher works. Can you say that Publisher will normally keep A4 as default if selected, or is Letter size a fixed default that really can't be changed? Do you think we would have taken you through the run-around if Publisher could not do this? Letter is not by any means a fixed default (although unfortunately it is default on all English-language installs of Windows, and must be manually changed). I can assure you that Publisher *will* do this, and *does* on my machine. SP1 for Office 2003 can be installed on an upgrade version, and programs from older Office versions should be left unaffected. Under Start Printers and Faxes, can you make sure that the 950c is selected as default (it has the green tick on its icon), and that you have checked both the "Advanced Print Settings" and the "Printing Defaults". Out of interest, what has the Document Image Writer got selected as its default paper size? -- Ed Bennett - MVP Microsoft Publisher http://www.mvps.org/the_nerd/ Before reading this message, view the disclaimer: http://mvps.org/the_nerd/disclaim.htm |

I was invited to download Office SP1 but hesitate as I have Office 97 as the base and have upgraded with Word 2003 and Publisher 2003. I am still using Excel 97 along with the other apps. Ed Hi Ed, I too am in the UK but don't have a problem with Publisher and paper sizes. As far as I know, Publisher simply queries the default printer for it's default paper size, and sets up your document to match that. Which driver are you using from HP? The 'Basic' driver or the 'Full Featured' driver? I'm now downloading the Basic driver and will install that on my own machine to see exactly what options you get. Try the following - Start, Printers & Faxes, right-click your printer and choose 'Printing Preferences'. Check out all the default options there and ensure they are set to A4. Another possibility is that the driver will set it's default paper size depending on your regional settings. Check your computer correctly knows what country it is in, and that you have set it for the British time zone, and a British Keyboard, and English (United Kingdom) Language. You can find these settings within Control Panel, Regional and Language Options. I have just installed the printer myself, and it defaulted to A4 in all possible places. Try the tips I gave above, and let us know. Andrew -- AZC MVP |

Thanks, Ed.
"I am using that printer with Publisher 2003, and have A4 as my default paper size in Publisher". I now know for sure it does do it and always did think that, but because I can't get it, I could not be sure. "Do you think we would have taken you through the run-around if Publisher could not do this?" No, Ed. I have the utmost respect for all of you as nice people as well as professionals. You will have to forgive a little frustration creeping into my mail. It's hard to sound cheerful in print... :-) "I can assure you that Publisher *will* do this, and *does* on my machine." I believe you, Ed. Like I said, I found it hard to believe I could not do it. Yet I can't. "SP1 for Office 2003 can be installed on an upgrade version, and programs from older Office versions should be left unaffected." With that, I will install it. Perhaps it will help... "Under Start Printers and Faxes, can you make sure that the 950c is selected as default (it has the green tick on its icon), and that you have checked both the "Advanced Print Settings" and the "Printing Defaults". Out of interest, what has the Document Image Writer got selected as its default paper size?" Yes, Ed. The 950c is set at default. I also have 950c (2) which is not the default printer (I don't know how it got there!) but the paper size default is, nonetheless, A4. The Document Image Writer, as with the others, (Printing Defaults...) is also set to A4. Regards, Ed "Ed Bennett" wrote in message ... Edward O'Brien was recently heard to utter: Hi, Mary. Hi, Andrew.
Thanks for all that.... As you will see from my recent postings, all you have suggested has been done. I did not know about a "Full Featured Driver" but HP did a remote check of my PC and found the latest driver with all the settings correct. I'll wait to hear from you when you try this other driver. It's very good of you to go to so much trouble. Regards, Ed "Andrew Z Carpenter [MVP:Windows:Security]" wrote in message ... "Edward O'Brien" wrote in message ... Hi, Mary. Hi, Ed.
I have now instralled Office 2003 SP1. It went smoothly but I'm afraid it did not resolve my problem. With all the input I have had without success, I am becoming resigned to living with the problem. Hi, Andrew.
I checked with HP and I do have the "Full Features Driver". I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver just in case there might be a bug there, but still no change in Publisher. I don't know anywhere else I can check. Everything is defaulted to; A4, United Kingdom, English (United Kingdom) and the 950c printer is set as Default. MS Word 2003, Excel and Access 97 are all defaulted to A4..., but not Publisher!!! I wonder if there is a Registry glitch! I wouldn't know where to look, though. If you think of anything, I'll be checking back every so often in case someone comes up with any further suggestions. Kind regards, Ed "Edward O'Brien" wrote in message ... Hi, Andrew. Hadn't thought about that one, Andrew. Raised a brief spark of hope. Sad,
however, it is set to English (UK). I have contacted Microsoft Support and hope to hear from them some time tomorrow. I have two free questions and they took a remote picture of the OS. Let's hope they find something... I'll let you know. Thanks and best wishes, Ed "Andrew Z Carpenter [MVP:Windows:Security]" wrote in message ... "Edward O'Brien" wrote in message ... Hi, Andrew.
Microsoft sorted it.... Would you believe how simple - Publisher reads the default paper size from the printer, as we all knew, but if the printer driver has been changed or updated, it will remember the last setting used, in my case clearly "Letter" size. To change the default you have got to use the "Print" option in the 'File' menu and manually change it there. It then remembers it. Using Page Setup or using the "Print" icon on the toolbar - which does not launch the print dialogue box - has no effect. Thanks for all your trouble. I'll copy this to your e-mail address and to Ed Bennett and Mary Sauer. Best wishes and compliments of the season. Ed "Andrew Z Carpenter [MVP:Windows:Security]" wrote in message ...
