Default Problem with 07 Office Pdf/Xps Add-in

Hi John

Thanks for your long response. Will try out yr suggestion. If nothing works,
I'll install a 3rd party programme.

Hello John

Yes, I have the 2007 version and downloading to Desktop was what I
did. I have also tried PrimoPdf but the result was not satisfactory -
incomplete conversion i.e. 1 and a half page out of 8.

Anyway, I repeated downloading the Add-in and this time I could
convert Word, Excel and Powerpoint but not the Publisher (cannot save
file), which is my main concern.

I have also tried Pack and Go for commercial printing to create the
pdf that way but it could not complete the operation.

I looked in the Print Setup, the printer name dropdown shows my
printer and Microsoft XPS document writer only even though my
download was for pdf and xps.

Any other suggestion?

In your Printer drop window...you should see
your default printer and PrimoPDF (if it is
installed) but the Office Plug-in will not be listed.

This is an unusual situation and I do not have
a solution. Maybe the following article would
offer some ideas:

(329820) How to use Office programs with
the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820

No guarantees that it will solve the issue but
I would suggest doing a little maintenance:

Empty your Temporary Internet Files Folder.

(260897) How to Delete the Contents of the
Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=260897

Running Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and
Defrag on a regular schedule is a good idea.

(310312) Description of the Disk Cleanup
Tool in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310312

(315265) How to Perform Disk Error Checking
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315265
(check the two boxes..."Automatically fix file
system errors" and "Scan for and attempt
recovery of bad sectors") the utility will run
the next time you restart your computer.
(run error checking repeatedly until it finds
no errors)

Good luck.

Default Problem with 07 Office Pdf/Xps Add-in

Hi Mary

Thanks for your response. My gripe now is only with 07 Publisher and always
with the same error message - Publiser cannot save the file, with the
Publish as Pdf or Xps function.

With the Office PDF add-on you have to "save as". It will not be in the
printer list.

Are you getting an error message?

Do you have Acrobat? I can save publications as .ps and open them with the
distiller. (Acrobat converts the file into a PDF).
Might be your document has some corruption going on. Turn off your picture
display (View, Pictures), will the conversion work now?

Default Problem with 07 Office Pdf/Xps Add-in

Excuse me for butting in here, but earlier in this thread you said that you
tried to use primopdf and it choked after converting only one and a half
pages. This implies that there is something on that second page that is
creating the problem. I would hazard a guess that you have some design
element hanging out into the scratch area off the page, and that would
explain why primopdf didn't work, and why the office pdf addon also chokes.
Study that second page. Try opening a new template and without making any
changes, try the pdf conversion. If successful, at least you know the
problem is with the specific file.

Default Problem with 07 Office Pdf/Xps Add-in

Hi David, thanks for joining in the fray! You could be right. Well, the
Publisher has actually prompted my once to say that there were few
problematic items which it was more than happy to correct for me. I followed
the options allowed and it seems to have corrected them; there was no more
prompting from it since then.

If there is still something that is still choking the conversion, it is not
obvious and I do not know how to locate it. Furthermore, I have tried out an
open source converter and it has done a perfect job (perhaps Prima cannot
jive with the Publisher). However, I would rather not have it take up my
limited space if I can rely on the Publisher.

Default Problem with 07 Office Pdf/Xps Add-in

I have used Primopdf for many years and would prefer to keep it over the
Office pdf addin, if I had to choose. It works with anything that you can
print, from any program, and the more recent versions allow me to append
pages to existing pdf files, which is a feature I use a lot.

If you can open a new multipage template in Publisher and get it to work
with primopdf or the Office pdf addon, then once again that suggests
something wrong with your publication. Perhaps deconstructing the second
page by dragging the content off into the scratch area, and adding back
design elements one by one, testing as you go will help you find what is
causing the problem.

Good luck...

Hi Mary

Thanks for your response. My gripe now is only with 07 Publisher and
always with the same error message - Publiser cannot save the file,
with the Publish as Pdf or Xps function.

With the Office PDF add-on you have to "save as". It will not be in
the printer list.

Are you getting an error message?

Hello John

Yes, I have the 2007 version and downloading to Desktop was what I
did. I have also tried PrimoPdf but the result was not
satisfactory - incomplete conversion i.e. 1 and a half page out of
8.

Anyway, I repeated downloading the Add-in and this time I could
convert Word, Excel and Powerpoint but not the Publisher (cannot
save file), which is my main concern.

I have also tried Pack and Go for commercial printing to create the
pdf that way but it could not complete the operation.

I looked in the Print Setup, the printer name dropdown shows my
printer and Microsoft XPS document writer only even though my
download was for pdf and xps.

Any other suggestion?

Hi John

Thanks for your response. Sorry I should have said that I've tried
what you've suggested and I got the prompt saying: Publisher
cannot
find the file,
and I searched the net and came across Mary's posting.

I've tried printing with Word and Excel, as Rob suggested, but
there
is no option to 'print or save' as pdf. The Print option shows
only
Print, Quick Print and Print Review.

Apparently, the add-in has not been installed.
I'm guessing you are running the 2007 version
of Office?

Just as an experiment...try downloading the
file to your desktop and install from there.

2007 Microsoft Office Add-in:
Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS

Also...here's a free .pdf converter that may be
worth a try:
