Default All files deleted?

I had to reinstall XP home over the existing install.
Yeah, sounds a bit win98 like. Has no other choice after a
severe virus problem.
After the reinstall all my emailfiles are missing, but
nowwhere in the installing-session I was asked to delete
or re-do them. Win 98 left all files intact. Has Mr Gates
really deleted a year of mails (10.000 messages) without
asking me?

Search for *.pst files, they may be hidden.
You didn't backup, because you weren't asked?
