Unwanted lines after every paragraph within a table cell

I have formatted a 49 page table to show border lines between individual cells but not around the entire table. Word XP reformatted the table to show additional lines following every paragraph within each table cell. I tried removing all borders to get rid of them, but they remain. What causes this and how can I fix it without retyping all 49 pages?

I'm guessing you managed to apply borders to paragraphs rather than cells.
