Default How do I get rid of this...?

I was trying to get rid of this double backward P sign (meant for paragraphs
I'm assuming) It appears everytime I press enter/start new paragraph...
I've fixed this on my friends computer with a click of a button, but I
CANNOT FIND the button in mine...I looked through the add new buttons under
the same section that button is supposed to be in, but it's not there.. my
friend told me the shortcut is ctrl+shift+* but it doesn't work for me. my
version is Office XP Standard...

Someone please help me!
-Thank you

If your toolbar doesn't show the paragraph symbol, go to Tools - Options -
View and clear all the items listed as Formatting Symbols.

I hope that does the trick.

The symbol (it's not a sign) is called a pilcrow. You should have a button
with that symbol on the Standard toolbar, clicking which toggles the display
of paragraph marks and some other non-printing characters. Reset the toolbar
if it's missing.

You can also use Tools Options: look at the checkboxes under 'Formatting
marks'.

It's on the View tab of Tools | Options. See also
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm. I don't know why
Ctrl+* wouldn't work, though, unless you've assigned that shortcut to a
different command. Are you sure you're using Word and not, perhaps,
WordPerfect or some other word processor?

Hi Suzanne,

I don't know why
Ctrl+* wouldn't work

maybe because of a localized keyboard layout?

For a german layout it would be [ctrl (].

My understanding was that Ctrl+* would work on any layout, which is why I
state it as Ctrl+* rather than as Ctrl+Shift+8, which is what it is on my
keyboard (but asterisk is not shifted eight on all keyboards).
