Default Searching for Contact in Office

I fill in the criteria bar for a contact, and it either keeps searching or
says, no results that fit, and I know that the contact is there, and their
first and last name, yet my Office search engine appears to not be working.
When I tried to search for an email, the same thing...no results, and both
worked yesterday. What happened to knock that feature out of kilter, and what
can be done to fix it?
