Default Number format and 0's

I'm using Word 2003 and merging info from an excel file. I don't understand
why the number or currency format in excel is not used when imported to Word
for mailmerging. How can I at least show a "," and decimal point?
Is there a way I can push the fields using Tab or space bar? It feels
stupid that I can't move them without having to press enter then make spaces
before I bring the field back up.
And, is there a way to edit the data source straight from Word like before?
