Default automatic configuration of the current version of microsoft office, access has failed

System: Vista Enterprise (32 bit)
Both Access 97 as well as Office 2007 installed. Different databases
open up via a shortcut which opens the appropriate application.

This has been working just great for ~9 months now on these machines,
and for the last 2 years on older (XP) computers.

Starting yesterday, we now get the error message
"automatic configuration of the current version of microsoft
office, access has failed"
both when we try to open a database by clicking on the associated file,
as well as trying to start the program alone.

We also get the error both trying to run the program normally, as well
as with Administrator privs.

I tried to both repair as well as remove the Office 2007 installation,
as well as re-install Office 2007 SP1; all of which failed with a message of
"corrupted installation base".

I'm stuck. I can't run, nor remove the program.
What now?
