Default Can't get rid of line across page

Does anyone have an idea of how to eradicate a line that
was created, I believe, when I strung two hyphens together
and then hit return w/o leaving a space which prompted the
program to create an automatic horizontal line across the
margins of the page immediately under the text? I have
tried deleting it every way I know how, but can't seem to
get rid of it. When you try to select the line, it appears
as an object (the up/down arrow tool appears when you try
to select it). But I am almost positive it was created as
text (versus an object). Any ideas?
