There is a 2006 World Cup tracker on the template web site, it is an Excel file.
You might modify it.

by automatic i mean if you fill in the results of games either win.draw or
lose the tracker updates the league and league positions with games
played,number of wins.no of draws and losses calculating the goals for and
goals against the number of points accrued and league position. This is for
english fa leagues

Thanks Mary I have already tried this but it is based on a knock out league
and not over a league season of 42 to 48 games

I really doubt that you are going to find a template that does that. I
suspect you're going to be on your own to create this one.
