Default Import Address Book form 98se to XP help

I bought a new system that has XP on it. I backed up all my email files
needed from my old system (which contains 98se on it) I was able to import
the accounts and the emails... now when I go to import my address book onto
the new system, it can't open the file.

Basically what I did was, on my old system with 98se on it. I exported the
address book as a .cvs file. Copied the files over to my new system with XP
on it, launched OE 6. I figured since both the 98se and XP were running OE 6
that maybe I could just do file -- import -- address book. That didn't work
because it was looking for a .wab file. So I did the following -- file --
import -- other address book. It took me to an import tools window. Said to
select which program I wanted to import the contacts from. Theres nothing in
the window to select??? So now I've got all my emails an accounts imported,
but unable to get my address imported.

I have a numerous amount of email addy's I could manually do it and re enter
each one by hand... but goodness... I was hoping for a much quicker solution.

Can anyone help?

Thanks...
Sue...

Hi Sue,

After you choose Other Address Book there should be "text file
(comma-separated values)" in the list of alternatives in the Address Book
Import Tool.

Just copy the WAB file to the XP computer and import it from there.

or

For the Comma Separated Values (.csv file)
File | Import | Other Address Book
Select Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Navigate to the .csv file and finish up the import.

Hello Kuay Tim and DGuess

Since you both said about the same thing I figured I would reply to you both
in one message. The problem is when I do that there is nothing in the list
of options from the Import Tools Window when it asks me to select...I don't
know what to do from this point on. Since this OE came with the XP and I've
upgraded everything, is it possible to uninstall and reinstall OE 6?

Thanks...
Sue...

Hi Sue,

The address book may be configured to share information which removes items
from the import list.

To work around this behavior, configure the address book not to share
contact information:
1.. Close all programs.
2.. Click Start, click Run, type wab in the Open box, and then click OK.
3.. On the Tools menu in the address book, click Options.
4.. Click Do not share contact information among Microsoft Outlook and
other applications, and then click OK.
5.. Close the address book.

Since it seems you are running OE express, you can copy the .WAB file from
the 98 machine to the same or proper location on the XP machine and this
will give you the info back.
Or you can start address book it self from OE and then do an export, then do
the same on the XP machine and do an import.
Just do the export and import using the "WAB" extension.

The Microsoft KB recommends using a CSV file to transfer entries because
entries can be lost if the WAB file is shared with Outlook or another
profile.

Hi there... I could not find this "Do Not Share" option on my system. At
least on the w98 system. HOWEVER I did try the steps you gave me on the w98
then when I could not find the option I tried to export again... this method
gave me the ability to export as a WAB...

So it seems if you export form actual Outlook rather from the address book
window itself, you do not get the option to export as WAb only CVS but when
you run WAB from the start menu run option I seem to be able to export with
the option of saving as WAB. At least on the w98 system it seems.

Give me a sec... gonna try to import now on m XP system...

YAY! I was able to get my addresses imported. However the Folders I had
them separated in did not come over, but that's minor compared to having to
insert each name, address, business contact number and so forth.

Thank you very much...
Sue...
