Default Web site created with Publisher loads slow in IE and fast in Firefox

Greetings All,

I createed a web site using MS Publisher 2003. It is
www.coloradopeaks.net. When I browse to it using Firefox, the pages load
very fast. When I browse to it using any version of Internet Explorer, the
pages load just as fast, but the embedded photos take up to a few minutes
before they display.

I haven't found any settings within Publisher that seem to affect this. I
searched google and didn't find any relevent information. Anyone have an
idea?

Thanks,

Dan K.

Dan,

all I can suggest is IE is a POS!. A Speed Report shows it loads in an
average of 21.68 seconds on a 56K connection, 6.64 on a 128K ISDN one.
with Opera and the Mozilla Project releasing newer (and IMO better)
browsers, I expect IE's share to continue to drop.

Pub 2003 makes various copies and formats of the images you insert in your
web pages. It does this with the goal of serving up the best version for
what ever browser you are using...with mixed results. The faster loading
images you are loading in FF, are a lower resolution, and smaller copy of
the image that loads in IE.

You can get faster loading pages in IE if you go to Tools Options Web
tab and uncheck "Rely on VML..." and "Allow PNG...".

And, compress the images before you publish the HTML. Reference: Compress
graphics file sizes to create smaller Publisher Web pages:

Ed,

I must confess I haven't, though I need to just so I can check web
pages. I'm using SeaMonkey and Mozilla mostly these days.

Thanks for the replies. I am using Firefox 2.0 and IE v6 & v7. IE is slow
regardless of the version. . .

David,

Thanks for the reply. I thought that if I choose the PNG image selection
that it would require my web sites viewers to be using IE. Am is
incorrect? I down't want to limit people to using IE to view my site.

I'll check out your sugestions and see what happens.

Thanks,

Dan K.

Oh, I think I misread your post. I went into publisher and checked "Tools,
Options, web" and the VML and PNG options were already de-selected. Did
you mean for me to enable them?

Thanks,

Dan K.

No. They should be unchecked.

The biggest issue is your image sizes. Compress them or optimize them before
you insert them.
