dates in a field/column

I tried to sort dates in the mm/dd/yyyy format in a column
of my table, but the computer is treating my dates as if
they are just numbers so the sorting is not quite right.
How do I format the date so that it can be properly sorted?

Is it a Date field or a Text field?
