Default why cant i change font

font manager, no.
commercial printing, no.
I'm only trying to apply original fonts that come with publisher so it
shouldn't be license problem.

I suggest you use the Detect and Repair in 2003 or Office Diagnostics in
2007. I also suggest you go to the web site of your printer model and look
around for an updated printer driver. It is always wise to completely remove
a driver before installing/re-installing.

before detect & repair

I would try; strip out ALL of Word's formatting and format your document IN
Publisher
In other words abandon all formatting that was done in Word and do it in
Publisher.

Would that have anything to do with selecting a font?

op didn't say selecting...said _changing_ a font.

imo it's better to format in Publisher then carrying junk from elsewhere
into Pub...perhaps there are errant styles or bad fonts like you guys said.

All those fonts you see with the @ are mostly oriental. For example
@Malgun Gothic is Korean; @Microsoft JhengHei is Chinese. And so on. Do a
Internet search for the font you are trying to use to find out what language it
is.

The font I'm trying to apply (Lucida Calliggraphy) isn't in any language,
it's just a designed font.

I don't what else I can tell you. Not all Office's fonts are installed by
default. Go to the Control Panel, Programs and Features folder, scroll down to
Office, click Change.
