Default Outlook 2007 address books unavailable

Something is inconsistent. If the Outlook Address Book Service exists in
your profile, then you will be able select "Show as email address book" in
the Properties of your Contacts Folders, unless you somehow managed to
corrupt this profile as well. You're not still trying to use Windows Easy
Transfer, are you?

Yes, I called the new profile Outlook 2007.

I'm

This is driving me crazy!!

Default Outlook 2007 address books unavailable

Ok, thanks. I will be as concise as possible.

The problem: In Outlook 2007 'Contacts' view all my contacts are there and
are editable and synch with my Nokia phone. In 'Mail' view, if I click on
the address book icon in the top toolbar, the address book window opens.
However, there is nothing in the small window under the 'address book'
heading. If I search for a contact, a window opens with the message "Search
cannot be completed. You must have an address list to search in. If you
don't have an address list, please contact your Microsoft Exchange
Administrator"

If go to 'ContactPropertiesOutlook Address Book, the name 'Contacts'
appears in the small window under 'Name of Address Book' but it is greyed
out. So is the 'Show This Folder as an E-mail Address Book' check box, which
is empty.

Steps taken to fix the problem:

Closed Outlook 2007 programme.
Opened 'Control PanelMailProfilesShow Profiles - Only profile shown is
Outlook
Added Outlook 2007 (new profile name)
Followed the process to set up e-mail account for this profiile and then
checked the 'Always use this Profile' option and selected Outlook 2007 as the
profile to be used.
Opened Outlook 2007 Programme.
Opened "FileData File ManagementData Files. There are now three files in
this window - Archive.pst, Outlook.pst (these were there before) also and
Outlook1.pst(new default file).
Changed the default to Outlook.pst.
Closed this window.

In 'Mail' view, if I click on the address book icon in the top toolbar, the
address book window opens. However, there is again nothing in the small
window under the 'address book' heading. If I search for a contact, a window

In 'ContactPropertiesOutlook Address Book, the name 'Contacts' appears in
the small window under 'Name of Address Book' but it is again greyed out. So
is the 'Show This Folder as an E-mail Address Book' check box, which is empty.

Closed Outlook 2007 programme and re-opened, but with same result.
Shutdown and re-started the computer, but with same result.

I hope this helps you to find what I might be doing wrong. Thanks.

You haven't created a new profile correctly. You are simply modifying your
old, corrupt profile. A new profile will only contain one PST file-- a new,
empty file that will be the default. If you want to use a previous file, you
must let Outlook create its new file, then open your old file in Outlook and
set it as the default. Then restart Outlook and enable your Contacts Folder
as an email address book in its
Give your new profile a unique name that does not contain the word "Outlook"
so you will have an all new profile.

There

This is driving me crazy!!

Default Outlook 2007 address books unavailable

Can someone please start these instructions from scratch.

I have read through all of this and read through the MS support materials on
this, and I still don't have an address book. I still get the "show this
folder as an email address book" greyed out despite having done everythign I
think I have been told to do.

If someone has succeeded could they please write idiot proof step by step
instructions and take nothing for granted. I'm afraid the previous MVP
instructions are too obscure for me to be sure I have followed them.

2. Add whatever email _accounts_ you want to that profile (which I assume is
what you meant when you said you "used one of my current email addresses").
3. Open your previous Outlook data file in Outlook and set it as your
default.
4. Restart Outlook.
5. Close the new, empty data file the Outlook created by default when you
created the new profile.
6. Make sure your Contacts Folder is enabled as an email address book in its
properties.

I have had this same problem since i switched computers back in December.
I
think I'm just about to the point where it may actually work. But I'm a
little confused here.... I created a new user via the mail / control
panel.
I used one of my current email addresses to do so. Which is also in my
other
folder. I have 4 other (total of 5) email's set up as pop accounts in
the
old profile. Which worked fine except for the address book not showing the
contacts. Since i imported everything via the data transfer cable
initially, i'm not sure where / how to find the settings so that
everything
will transfer to the new profile account.
If I do as stated from this last post, "open your old PST file" ....
should
this be done under the new profile or old? I assumed New..... Soooo I
click
on that and it opens folders... microsoft... Outlook.... from there on
the
right side, i have a folder titled accounts and under that i have 9 other
files all titled outlook (1.2.3.4. etc...) they are all type .pst.

Thank you for this posting! I have been trying for a month to figure
out
why
after getting my new machine with Vista & MS Office 2007 then migrating
my
datafiles/setting from old machineto new one that the Outlook Address
Book
was grayed out and I could not link my contacts to my address book. A
support
person at Microsoft said I did not move my csv file and that was why I
could
not get my address book to work even through I could see the contacts
in
my
contact list. It did not make sense to me so I started web research on
this
issue and finally cam on your answer. My question is if I delete the
current
profile and add a new one to make the Outlook Address Book visible, can
I
still use the same information from the old profile for the new one and
import my old pst file?

Can't make it any clearer than that. You'll have to tell us what you don't
understand. We can't read your mind.

Thank you very much Russ. My problem is now resolved. As you said, I wasn't
creating a new profile, but merely modifying the old one. Thanks again for
your help and patience.
