Default Word New Document number keeps increasing

I just noticed that last few days that every time I open a new blank
document, the name of the document, "Document __" keeps increasing. I do a
lot of cutting and pasting into a new blank documents and then save it under
another name.

Usually when I open a new document from my desktop shortcut, the new blank
document is named "Document 1."

If you close then re-open Word and the number is incremented (note Word can
still be running, even if it appears not to be, if Outlook is running -
check the task manager CTRL+ALT+DEL) then something is preventing Windows
from deleting temporary files - see
