Default Gigantic Header

I have Office XP and recently my documents started the
annoying problem of begining at the middle of the page. I
selected view header, and there is no data in the header
but the header box is so big that it uses up nearly half
of each page.

I tried to adjust the header size by manipulating the
header bar to the left of the page but this bar does not
appear out of the ordinary and I can only move it up
slightly. When I do this, the header moves up a little but
then the header and footer run together.

Can anyone help, please

Default Gigantic Header

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, change the vertical alignment from Center
to Top.
