Why Mail Recipient disappeared from MSWord Send To
Hi M,
I think this has good prospects of returning Outlook Express as the default mail client with the send to mail working. The more information link is a Microsoft KB article on the subject. First, if Outlook is installed be sure it is not selected as the default mail program. Go to the Start, Run box, and type (or better, use copy/paste to enter the following: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg (Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct) The Microsoft KB recommends first closing all programs except Explorer and Systray. Outlook might be set as the default mail client in the registry. This value may need to be changed. The next step (likely not necessary) would be to reinstall Outlook Express. More Information http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=ie600 Alternative Help Suggestion 1. http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx; then... 2. http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx -- HTH...Please post back to this thread Courtesy of: ~Robear Dyer (aka PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE/OE), AH-VSOP -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MVP - (IE/OE) Lynnwood, WA * "Me" wrote in message m... As recently as last Monday, I was always able to do File / Send To / Mail Recipient in MSWord when Outlook Express is my default mailer. But starting on Tuesay, I lost Mail Recipient option. All I have is Mail Recipient (for Review) and Mail Recipient (as Attachment). Also, when I set my default mailer to Outlook, the Mail Recipient option returns. What is causing this behavior? More importantly, how can I get Mail Recipient back as a Send To option when my default mailer is Outlook Express? I am using MS Word 2002 10.5815.4219 SP-2, Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123, Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106CO, and MS Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP-4. But I have the same revisions on another PC, where Sent To / Mail Recipient does appear in MSWord when Outlook Express is the default mailer. To my knowledge, nothing changed on the PC where Mail Recipient disappeared. My PC is centrally- dministrated :-(, so it possible that something changed unbeknownst to me. But the IT people have looked, and they cannot find any relevant changes. KB #290797 suggests fixes to the win.ini file. But the suggested lines are already in my win.ini file. |

Why Mail Recipient disappeared from MSWord Send To
Hi Me,
Sorry you are still having difficulty. This appears to be a Word issue, but I'm not familiar with the problem. Here's an article that pertains to Word 2003. The Microsoft KB likely has articles for older versions on this problem. This tells how to set this (send to option) up in Word. Hope it works for you. http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=wrd2003 Use keywords: send to mail recipient Someone in one of the Word newsgroups may have a ready answer. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MVP - (IE/OE) Lynnwood, WA * "Me" wrote in message om... "Kuay Tim" wrote: I think this has good prospects of returning Outlook Express as the default mail client with the send to mail working. Thanks for your response. I need to clear up some confusion. OE __is__ my default mail client. I have no problem with that. Looking at IE Properties / Programs, I see that E-mail is set to OE. When I run OE, it is does __not__ complain that OE is not the default. (As a double-check, when I set the default mail client to Outlook, then start OE, OE does complain that it is not the default. So the check is working just fine.) My problem is: __when__ OE is the default mail client, MSWord File / Send To fails to show (simple) Mail Recipient. (As a double-check, when Outlook is the default mail client, Mail Recipient __does__ apprear. So the problem is only whe OE is the default mail client.) Having said that, I did follow up on your pointers -- to no avail. So I am still looking for ideas. Go to the Start, Run box, and type (or better, use copy/paste to enter the following: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg I had previously toggled "/unreg" and "/reg", to no avail. The Microsoft KB recommends first closing all programs except Explorer and Systray. I have shutdown and restarted the system after each and every change suggested here. Outlook might be set as the default mail client in the registry. .... More Information http://support.microsoft.com/default...&Product=ie600 I did __not__ have the DllPath key. I followed the instructions at the URL above, to no avail. The next step (likely not necessary) would be to reinstall Outlook Express. I did this, to no avail. One other idea .... In the SendTo folder, initially the Mail Recipient Properties / General "Opens with" indicated "unknown application". I thought that was strange, even though that seems to work on another PC, where I do not have any problem with the MSWord Send To / Mail Recipient when OE is the default mail client. (Yes, I am constantly looking for differences between that PC and the laptop where I the problem. I don't know all the places to look.) Nonetheless, I clicked on Change and associated msimn.exe with the SendTo / Mail Recipient file. Again, to no avail. Any other ideas? Again, the problem is __not__ how to set up OE as the default mail client. The problem is: __when__ OE is the default mail client, MSWord Files / Send To does not show (simple) Mail Recipient in the selection list. It used to work, now a week ago. And again, the version information is: MS Word 2002 10.5815.4219 SP-2, Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123, Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106CO, and MS Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP-4. |

Why Mail Recipient disappeared from MSWord Send To
1. Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed?
Do you have this Registry key?... HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \WAB \WAB4 If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set to 1 (one)? If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office). Change the value to 0 (zero) and see if it makes any difference. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values.) Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is disabled. cf. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/wab.htm#share 2. How to create a Mail Merge http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MailMe...AMailMerge.htm You can perform a Mail Merge in various Word versions, in many cases using OE Address Book, to print standard labels for, say, Christmas cards or newsletter mailings. Much depends on the version of Word version in use: Word 97: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195609 Word 2000: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=212034 Word 2002: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=2946834 On each page, scroll down to Related Articles for links to relevant articles like http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211206 (WD 2000), http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=270623, and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=191264 (WD 97). 3. Why Mail Recipient disappeared from MSWord Send To
What operating system are you running? If a Win9x or Me system, try the
following: Open Windows Explorer and check your "SendTo" folder and see if there is a zero byte file called "Mail Recipient.MAPIMail" and if not found, create a empty file using notepad and save it in the SendTo folder. Remove the default txt extension from it by renaming it without an extension. -- Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express Please reply only to newsgroup. "Me" wrote in message om... "Kuay Tim" wrote: Sorry you are still having difficulty. This appears to be a Word issue .... Someone in one of the Word newsgroups may have a ready answer. Thanks. I started by posting to an appropriate microsoft.public.word newsgroup. But after getting no response for some time, I decided to try here. Although the manifestation of the problem appears in MSWord, I thought the root cause might lie with OE for a couple reasons. First, I do not have this problem when Outlook is the default mail client. Second, our internal IT people agreed with me that this looks more like something have to do with OE than with Word per se. Here's an article that pertains to Word 2003. .... http://support.microsoft.com/default...roduct=wrd2003 This article deals with the "opposite" of my problem. I have Mail Recipient (Review) and Mail Receipient (As Attachment). I am missing (simply) Mail Recipient. For future reference, should I assume that such KBs relate to my problem, even if the description does no indicate it? (Please forgive my naivete. By the way, KB 290797 and 834008 seem to relate directly to my problem. Unfortunately, their remedies either do not apply or do not solve the problem.) |

Why Mail Recipient disappeared from MSWord Send To
For information on file associations, see this link:
See the Identifying Attachment File Types and Setting File Associations section of Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/decode.htm As for Windows 2000 in a corporate environment, with IT support, it's quite possible that your system has restrictions imposed by the IT staff and you really should consult them before making changes to the system. Even if you are sure that Outlook Express is your default mail client, you might try re-registering it and see if that fixes the problem: Go to Start | Run and type the following: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg (Check your file path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct since it may be different in Win2K/XP) Make certain to include the quotations marks and the space between the ending quotation mark and the slash. Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools\Internet Options\Programs and set OE as the default mail (and news) program. Good luck. -- Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express Please reply only to newsgroup. "Me" wrote in message om... "Jim Pickering" wrote: What operating system are you running? I put all that information in my original posting, and I repeated it in my first follow-up response. To wit: MS Windows 2000 5.00.2195 SP-4, MS Word 2002 10.5815.4219 SP-2, Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1123, and Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106CO. Remove the default txt extension from it by renaming it without an extension. I tried your suggestion (again), to no avail. It is funny that you mention this. I have come full circle on this one. When I first encountered the problem, the SendTo / "Mail Recipient" file did not appear[*] to have an extension. So the problem[**] occurred even without the extension. When I stumbled across that file, I noticed that according to Properties / General, "Open with" indicated "unknown application". Now, that is also the case on another PC that does __not__ exhibit the problem[**]. That is, the "Mail Recipient" appears[*] to have no extension, its properties indicate "open with unknown application", and yet MSWord Send To has the option simple "Mail Recipient" (without "for review" and without "as attachment"). Nonetheless, I thought that the "unknown application" seemed wrong. So in my ignorance (of MSWin), I clicked on Change, and failing to find an existing program, I clicked on Other, and found and selected msimn.exe. At that moment, the ".mapimail" extension appeared. That bother me, but my IT support person said that should be okay. Now here is the part about MSWin that I do not understand .... I would like to get back to the state of the original SendTo / "Mail Recipient" file. But when I cannot find a way to set its properties back to "unknown application". (And I cannot find a way to delete the association that I created with the file type "MAPIMAIL file".) Even stranger: I was going to copy the "unknown application" "Mail Recipient" file from the "good" PC to the "bad" PC through a networked shared disk. After I copied it to the shared disk, when I look at the file on the shared disk from the "good" PC, it has the expected properties: the file name appears[*] to have no extension, and the Properties / General page says "open with unknown application". But when I look at the file on the shared disk from the "bad" PC, I see a ".mapimail" extension, and the Properties page says "open with Outlook Express" (no doubt because of the association that I created earlier on the "bad" PC). How can the same file appear so differently from two different systems? I can understand the differences in the "open with" property, since I created an association with the ".mapimail" extenstion only the "bad" PC. But I do not understand why the extension appears[*] to be there or not for the same physical file, depending the system I use. Let me clarify some terms .... [*] I know that there are folder options that can change the appearance of file names. I believe that I have set those options consistently on both "good" and "bad" PCs. Specifically, I believe that View / Details is selected; and I believe that Tools / Folder Options / View has deselected "hide file extensions for known file types"; and I believe I clicked on "set all of your folders to" Like Current Folder. But I also know this is error-prone. I cannot prove I did this correctly. Sigh. [**] The problem I am describing is: when Outlook Express is the default mail client, simply "Mail Recipient" (without qualifiers like "for review" and "as attachment") does not appear in the MSWord Files / Send To list. I have confirmed several ways that OE is indeed the default mail client at the time. |
