Default Contacts not filing correctly

Contacts folder is not filing correctly. When you create a new
contact, they organize themselves based on what is in the 'company'
field - blatantly ignoring whatever you put in the 'file as' field.
Even if you leave the 'company' field blank, they show up at the
beginning of the contacts folder with a blank heading. Does someone
know if this is something that happens by design....perhaps a setting
somewhere....?

Yes. It is a setting. Only you could know what it is because only you know
your Outlook version, the view, and the settings you specified. Without that
basic information, no one could possibly help you.

It's Outlook 2003 Standard with sp2....I've gone into the Contacts
options and toggled both settings. But it ignores whatever is in the
'file as' field

Sorry. You answered none of my questions and provided none of the
information we would need. Please read my post again and respond
accordingly. Also, you don't populate the File As... field, Outlook does, so
I don't understand what you mean by "whatever you put in the File As field."

I'm not sure what you are asking....if I knew what settings were to
blame, i would put them in the post - it's Outlook 2003 Standard with
sp2 using the 'address card' view in the contacts folder(does it in any
view though). It doesn't populate the file as field automatically like
it should, so I have been entering it manually. whether the file as
field is blank or not, the contacts folder files the contact according
to the company name. if you leave the company name blank it puts the
contact at the beginning of the contacts folder, even if the file as
field has something in it. If that's not clear, then i cannot be clear.

As I said, you do not populate the File As... field. Outlook does, using the
setting you specified.
I am asking you for the setting you specified. Only you know that. And if
you don't know, look and remind yourself:
Tools Options Preferences Contact Options... Default File As
order...

The default 'file as' order has been set to each option at some
point(first last, company, etc) and it seems to make no difference with
the Contacts - new or existing. I understand what you mean about the
settings, but they all get ignored. No matter what is in the 'file
as' field, the Contacts organize themselves based on what is in the
Company field - and they are not supposed too. Is this just
corruption of the Contacts? Should i just re-install Outlook?

When you create a new Contact in Outlook, are you saying that the File As...
field is not formatted with the preference you have set for that profile? If
so, then you have a corrupt profile. Reinstalling Outlook won't help (never
does). Create a new profile. Repair your PST file before you do.
