Hi Box ),
in the newsgroups
you posted:

|| have to talk to you.
||
|| I ordered an HP desktop and paid extra to have Publisher installed.
|| I just can't believe that you provide no facility for email support
|| in this situation. Stop and think about that for a second. How is
|| someone supposed to get support in this situtation?

I should have added that it might be worth a call to see if you can get free
support, but you will for sure need your product ID. There have been
occasions where MS has skipped the fees.

A small child turns to Ed, and exclaims: "Look! Look! A post from Box
!"...
Congratulations, you're wrong.

Well, actually there are more possibilities
1) Brian's wrong
2) HP's wrong
3) Neither of the above (i.e. something like Brian provided an accurate
response to the situation provided, but the situation in reality is
different to that described here, meaning that HP were correct with regards
to the accurate reality scenario)

I just called HP and they said I have
to talk to you.

They said "Go and talk to Brian Kvalheim"?
Brian is not a representative of Microsoft. Neither am I, and it isn't that
likely that you will meet one here.

I ordered an HP desktop and paid extra to have Publisher installed.
I just can't believe that you provide no facility for email support
in this situation.

I don't provide email support for anyone apart from very good friends.
Brian may be a little more relaxed about this, I don't know.

Do you have a Certificate of Authenticity for your copy of Publisher?
Certificates of Authenticity are normally only issued for OEM licenses, not
boxed copies. Or at least they were last time I checked. I haven't got a
boxed Publisher 2003, so I can't check up on that.

Do you have an original Publisher box for this copy of Publisher? If yes,
then this copy is almost certainly not an OEM copy, and Microsoft are able
to provide support for it.

Do you have a Publisher installation CD-ROM? Does it say "For distribution
only with a new PC" on it? If yes to the first, and no to the second, then
your copy is not an OEM copy. If the Publisher CD-ROM is provided on your
restore/recovery CD from HP, then the license is almost certainly OEM, and
HP are obliged to support.

OEM licensing means that HP (or any other computer manufacturer for that
matter), buy in licenses en masse for copies of Publisher. The contract is
not between you and Microsoft, but between HP and Microsoft. Your contract
is with HP.
The terms of HP's contract with Microsoft is that HP are responsible for
providing all support for the product, if the product is OEM. Microsoft got
paid far less for the product than it would cost retail, so you don't get
the same standard of service as you would with a boxed copy.

Normally, all pre-installations are done using OEM licenses. However,
occasionally some OEMs will preinstall a boxed copy for you.

I think the disclaimer 'such as' pretty much gave that away. Maybe you should call HP and have them explain it to you.

How was it obvious that is was an example. Do a search of this newsgroup to
see how many times people have asked how to insert page numbers in Publisher
2002/2003 because they changed the menu options from Publisher 2000. How
about you get off your high horse?
