TOC page numbers in Templates
I have created a template with a TOC. Before I save the
template, I update the TOC and the page numbers are correct. After I save the template and reopen the .dot file as a new .doc, ALL the page numbers default to the page number of the first item in the TOC. How can I avoid this? Please post answer to newsgroup. Thank you. |

TOC page numbers in Templates
A TOC in a template is a prospective object. It has no data until you create
headings or table entry fields. If you update the TOC, it will reduce itself to representing whatever content is actually present. If your template actually contains the necessary headings and perhaps some boilerplate text under them, then the entries and their page numbers will represent this, but if your template is empty, then the TOC will be as well. The fact that it is empty doesn't mean that it isn't still functional, however; as you add headings, it will pick them up. -- Suzanne S. TOC page numbers in Templates
Elizabeth,
I've seen this problem a lot in TOC and NUMPAGES fields. Word seems to open with these fields displaying the wrong result, no matter what, until they are either manually or automatically updated. If you have the "Update fields" option checked under Tools|Options, Print tab, this problem should resolve itself whenever you print the document. However, if you want to see the correct result without having to print or manually update the TOCs, you would need an AutoOpen macro which updates all the TOCs when a document is opened.
