Default Microsoft Office Files size became 0 byte Might due to virus infection

Microsoft Office files including excel, word power point and access database suddenly became zero byte, may be due to some virus infection. Please let me know about the actual cause, remedy to recover the files and measures to avoid any future disaster.
Thanks & Regards

Install a Virus scanning software, keep it up to date, when system is
clean, restore data files from the backup copies that you made in case
something happened to the computer.
