docx files won't open - - wrong error messages

I have MS Publisher 2003. I tried the procedures discussed here to open a
..docx file I received as an EMail attachment. The result is an error
message:

"There is not enough memory to convert the text formatting. Windows is low
on memory. Save your work and close the other programs to free up memory,
and then try again"

The computer has plenty of memory, with very little activity open.

The .docx file will not open at all for cutting or pasting into Publisher.
There is nothing in the Publisher help about ".docx" I understand my
Publisher 2003 is fully updated. Others are reporting hours of difficulty
with ".docx"

I also have Word 2002. Trying to open a .docx file only results in a
referral to an update for Word 2007. It's the wrong update, and nothing
changes.

I then used Windows Explorer and found the .docx file. I copied it to paste
to the clipboard (or text window) in Publisher 2003. On attempting to copy

"Clipboard. Item not collected: Format not supported by Office Clipboard"

I'm not sure exactly what you you know from what you've written, but
..docx documents are a new format generated
by Word 2007. They are not backwards compatible with previous versions
of Word. You'll need Word 2007 or a viewer for that program (I think one
exists) to do anything with it.

Why are you trying to open a Word file with Publisher? Download the
compatibility pack and then you can open it with Word.

Alternative: Ask the sender to save it as a Word 97-2003 format.

On selecting "OK" I am sent to this web page:

After downloading this and following all the Microsoft instructions, I
proceed to open the .docx file again. This returned the same error message.

Can you ask someone else to open the file for you and save it as the older
format?

I have asked the person who sent me the .docx file to convert it and send it
as a .doc file. I don't have a response.

Since Microsoft has done a lot with .docx files, I don't think that would
continue to resolve this. I just want to be able to follow Microsoft's
instructions and make this work.

(I regret my multiple posts of the same message. The system keeps giving me
error messages saying it's down and to try later, etc. So I did. Later I
find the message was posted here anyway.)
