Default Can not edit a pub. 2003 file as it has converted to a pub. 2007 d

Don't ask me how it happened but I created a pub. 2003 document after many
hours of work. Saved it, went to have lunch, came back to edit it and
"somehow" it is now a pub. 2007 file. I can not print it, edit it or save it
and I am going bonkers! Not really that interested in how it happened except
to stop it from happening again. I need it for an assignment and don't want
to create it again. I am using a relatively new computer that came with
office 2007 pre-installed. I re-installed office 2003 and use this as this
is what I am familiar with. Occassionally the enter your trial key for 2007
comes up which I cancel. The same thing happened with an xls file but I just
thought I must have created in the xls 2007 file rather than the xls 2003
file. Now I am not so sure. As you may have guessed I have not un-installed
office 2007 as I thought I might be it some time in the future (not wanting
it now)
Can anyone please help me with how to "convert" this file back to a pub 2003
file so I can use it?????

Why do you think it's a 2007 file? There is no "2007 version" like there is
with Word or Excel.

Hi JoAnn
Thanks for showing an interest in my problem.
When I went to reopen the document the office 2007 icon flashed up, then
asked me to enter in a product code for office 2007 which I do not have and
so closed accordingly. Then my document appeared on the screen with what I
am assuming is the office publisher 2007 version icon. It is definately not
the 2003 icon version anyway. I can not edit it or email it or save it. I
can just scream at it!
I have moved slightly forward; when I went into Start, All programms,
Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, my document is there as an open file. Which
when I click on it, it opens up as a 2003 file. I got all excited, saved it
to my pen drive and low and behold, it saved as a 2007 file.
When I open all programmes there is a programme sitting there called
Microsoft office publisher 2007. I have no idea (obviously) what is going on.
Maybe you do?

Actually this kinda sounds like you created the file in Pub 2007 by mistake
and the trial has run out.

If you opened it with Pub 2003 and you can work on it, not sure what the
problem is, unless your Pub 2007 Icon is now associated with all your pub
files instead of Pub 2003. Open Pub 2003 and browse to your file, open it,
make a change, save it, close it, reopen it with 2003...is it ok?

If so all you need to do is fix your file associations so .pub files will
open with Pub 2003 not 2007

Default Can not edit a pub. 2003 file as it has converted to a pub. 20

This ALMOST sounds like my problem... Perhaps someone can help me with it????
I have searched and searched the web and cannot find another problem like
mine.
I downloaded the MS Office 2007 Trial but am only having this problem with
Publisher .... Word Excel etc seem fine
I created some documents in Publisher 2007 that now, after the trial has
expired, I can only open and work on if I first right click, then "Open in
Publisher 2003". When I go to save the file (which it says is in 2003
version), it still saves it as a 2007 version which I again have to right
click and ask it to Open in Publisher 2003. This is tedious and very
annoying.
THEN to boot, I opened another folder with a bunch of Publisher 2003 files
that I had not worked on doing the trial (therefore were created in Pub.2003)
but ALL of them are now Read Only Publisher 2007 files!
HOW CAN I CONVERT ALL MY PUBLISHER FILES BACK TO 2003 version please?
And if I did uninstall the 2007 MS Office, will I lose all my files that:
a: I created in 2007
b: have somehow been converted to 2007
HELP PLEASE!!!
Thank you!

You need to uninstall all the remnants of Office 2007.
How to uninstall the 2007 Office system if you cannot uninstall it by using the
"Add or Remove Programs" feature
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928218

Have you tried to change the file association? Right-click any Publisher file,
properties, opens with.

You will not lose your Publisher files when you uninstall Office 2007. If you
are unsure, back them up...

Default Can not edit a pub. 2003 file as it has converted to a pub. 20

Hello Mary and thanks for writing.
I'm not sure whether that would work or I would just lose all my work. I
cannot back up all of My Documents and Publisher 2007 seems to have permeated
- and taken over as I said - all my Publisher files, even those I haven't
used for years. If I uninstall MS Office 2007 what happens to:
1. the documents/graphics I created with Word, Excel, or Publisher 2007?
2. the documents that seem to have changed to 2007 without my help?
I simply cannot afford to lose any of it.
PS I can uninstall using Add or Remove Programs. Plus I see that there are
a number of updates installed (both security and just updates) for both
Office 2007 and Publisher 2007 - listed separately. Does that mean anything?
I thought I said in my original post that in order to open and work with all
of them I have to right click and change to Open with..... in order to work
on them. And then I am still unable to save them in the Publisher 2003
version, only back to the Publisher 2007 version. Very frustrating and very
time-consuming.
Thanks again.

Default Can not edit a pub. 2003 file as it has converted to a pub. 20

If I click on any Publisher file, it will open in 2007. I have Publisher
versions going way back. Before Publisher 2007 all my files would open in 2003
even if the file was composed in Publisher 2000 or 98 or 97. This is the way it
is. Publisher 2003 will open 2007 files without a converter.

If you "saved as" the files in Excel or Word as older documents they will open
in Office 2003. If you didn't there is a converter application you can download.

And if I did uninstall the 2007 MS Office, will I lose all my files that:
a: I created in 2007
b: have somehow been converted to 2007
HELP PLEASE!!!
Thank you!

Actually this kinda sounds like you created the file in Pub 2007 by
mistake
and the trial has run out.

| Don't ask me how it happened but I created a pub. 2003 document after
many
| hours of work. Saved it, went to have lunch, came back to edit it and
| "somehow" it is now a pub. 2007 file. I can not print it, edit it or
save it
| and I am going bonkers! Not really that interested in how it happened
except
| to stop it from happening again. I need it for an assignment and
don't
want
| to create it again. I am using a relatively new computer that came
with
| office 2007 pre-installed. I re-installed office 2003 and use this as
this

2007
| comes up which I cancel. The same thing happened with an xls file but
I
just
| thought I must have created in the xls 2007 file rather than the xls
2003
| file. Now I am not so sure. As you may have guessed I have not
un-installed

wanting
| it now)
| Can anyone please help me with how to "convert" this file back to a
pub
2003
| file so I can use it?????
|
| Hi JoAnn
| Thanks for showing an interest in my problem.
| When I went to reopen the document the office 2007 icon flashed up, then
| asked me to enter in a product code for office 2007 which I do not have
and
| so closed accordingly. Then my document appeared on the screen with
what
I
| am assuming is the office publisher 2007 version icon. It is definately
not
| the 2003 icon version anyway. I can not edit it or email it or save it.
I
| can just scream at it!
| I have moved slightly forward; when I went into Start, All programms,
| Microsoft Office Publisher 2003, my document is there as an open file.
Which
| when I click on it, it opens up as a 2003 file. I got all excited,
saved
it
| to my pen drive and low and behold, it saved as a 2007 file.
| When I open all programmes there is a programme sitting there called
| Microsoft office publisher 2007. I have no idea (obviously) what is
going
on.
| Maybe you do?

Hello Mary and thanks for writing.
I'm not sure whether that would work or I would just lose all my work. I
cannot back up all of My Documents and Publisher 2007 seems to have permeated
- and taken over as I said - all my Publisher files, even those I haven't
used for years.

It hasn't. The way Windows file associations work is that Windows always
opens files ending with a particular extension with a particular
program. Publisher files all end in .pub; for all versions from
Publisher 1.0 in 1991 to the present day. Publisher 2007 was the most
recent application to be installed, so it told Windows that it would
take care of all .pub files; Windows happily obliged. So whenever you
tell Windows to open a Publisher file, Windows takes a look at its list
of what to open with what, sees that Publisher files open with Publisher
2007, and fires up the file in Publisher 2007.

Uninstalling the program won't touch any data in My Documents (or yours).

If I uninstall MS Office 2007 what happens to:
1. the documents/graphics I created with Word, Excel, or Publisher 2007?

Word 2007 and Excel 2007 use new file formats, so you will need the
Compatibility Pack for Office 2003 to be able to open these files in the
earlier version. Publisher 2007 and 2003 have the same file format, so
you should have no problems opening these files.
