Default Insert Caption Numbering Error

I have a long document that has 100+ illustrations all using the
captions and cross references. I have been adding illustration and
captions as needed and the numbering has been updating perfectly, until
last week... Now when I insert a new caption, the number starts at "1"
or does not have my formatting label listed in the drop-down list.

I have been able to cut&paste them from another "correct" caption,
update them, and it seems to work fine - but this is annoying - how can
I fix this?!?!

Default Insert Caption Numbering Error

Does this happen only with a particular document, or can you reproduce it in
other documents as well?

Only with one document right now, although I believe I had this happen
with another similar document. I can not determine if it is template /
style definition problem, document section problem, etc. I can not
reproduce the problem in a clean document or any other documents that I
created. Only my "inherited" documents.

Have you checked to make sure the caption label is the same? A label
difference can be as small as a case change or a space would change the
numbering. To fix a field that is already inserted, show field codes and
edit the label (aka SEQ identifier). To prevent accidentally getting an
incorrect SEQ sequence, delete the unwanted caption label.

The problem starts with the fact that my caption label does not appear
in the list from "insert caption"... and if I manually enter it, the
number starts at "1". Do you know why a caption label would not appear
in the "insert label" dialog box? If I copy a "correct" one somewhere
in the document and paste it into the "new" location, I can update the
numbering and it works fine, its very strange.

Note that caption labels are stored in the Normal template, so they should
be available for all documents for the current user/installation of Word.

Default Insert Caption Numbering Error

If you are using W2003 or W2007, use open and repair on the file. (From
within Word,go to File/Office button Open; select the file name; and click
the down arrow on the Open button in the lower right of the dialog.) If
Word finds no errors, look for something else. For example, does the error
occur after start of a new section?

For what it's worth, I find it much faster to copy and paste a caption label
and number (& later update the field) than it is to go through the menus to
insert them, particularly when working an already prepared document where I'm
just adding the labels and numbers.
