Address book first name last name not consistent
When looking in the address book, such as in Word to fill in an envelope,
there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to how the contacts are listed by name. If I look in my contacts I can have two names both filed last name, first name, exactly the same. But when I look in the address book under contacts one of them will be last name, first name and the other will be first name, last name. I have checked all of the settings under toolsaccount settingsaddress bookshow names by and toolsoptionscontact options but they do not seem to effect the order in the address book. Is there a way to make the address book show these consistenly? Thanks, Mike Wilson |

You failed to post your Outlook version which makes answering you difficult.
So when you went to Tools E-mail accounts View or change existing directories or address books Outlook Address Book Change… and set your sort order there, exactly what did you specify and what is not occurring that you think should? -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "firstcapmike" wrote in message ... Address book first name last name not consistent
Sorry, I have had the issue in 2007 and 2003 versions of Outlook. In the
account settings address book change setting it is set for First Last, which is want I want it to be. So if I open the address book in Word it lists all of my contacts from Outlook but some are listed for example as John Doe and others as Doe, Jane. If I look in Contacts in Outlook John Doe and Jane Doe are entered in exactly the same way. For some reason they look fine in contacts but not in the address book. This is a problem for some users as they may have hundreds of contacts and if they are creating an envelope from a contact and look in the address book in Word they sometimes have to find the last name instead of the first name alphebetically. So to recap - Outlook CONTACTS are "filed" last name, first name. Outlook ADDRESS BOOK is set to First Last. Most names show in the ADDRESS BOOK as First Last, but some show as Last First and when comparing these entries in CONTACTS I can find no difference in them that would make them show up different. You also failed to post the view you are using to view Contacts in Outlook.
Explain this statement: "Outlook CONTACTS are "filed" last name, first name" I'm sure Outlook is doing what you told it to. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "firstcapmike" wrote in message ... Address book first name last name not consistent
What does it matter how I am viewing contacts in Outlook? Wouldn't the
contents be the same however they are viewed? If the contact is - First name: John, Last Name: Doe it shouldn't matter how it is viewed it is still the same data. Explain this statement: "Outlook CONTACTS are "filed" last name, first name" In toolsoptionspreferencescontact optionsdefault "file as" order is Last, First. Again, these all show up correct in contacts, viewing as categaory for instance, Full name is first name, last name, file as is last name, first name. But when viewing in address book they display both ways. Some entries first name, last name, some last name, first name. If all are displaying correctly for full name and file as in contacts why are they different in address book? Address book first name last name not consistent
Because you said the address book view sort differently than your Contacts
sort in the Contacts Folder. Each view in the Contacts Folder sorts differently and you failed to specify which method you are using to sort the Contacts Folder. Provide a specific example of a Contact that is not sorting in the address book view the way you specified. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "firstcapmike" wrote in message ... My guess is that the difference is that some contacts you imported and and some you created manually. The odd ones are the imported ones, I suspect. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |
