Informal testing of Access 97 Skills
Did you get the INTERMEDIATE and ADVANCED course descriptions the wrong way
around? The ADVANCED course descriptions you gave does not look like an ADVANCED course. If it is advanced, it just means they put the junk in there that hadn't fitted into the BEGINNER/INTERMEDIATE syllabus. It does not look like it has any perquisites. (david) "Tierney" wrote in message ... Hello, I need a way to test the skills of employees in Access 97. I am a corporate trainer and we offer MS course to all employees. The courses are taught by instructors from a local college. I have scheduled an Advanced Access couse. The prerequisite was Intermediate Access. However, I have employees telling me they are ready for the Advanced course. Well, employees often think they are more advanced than they actually are. I know there is "skill testing" available through various companies. However, I cannot get approval to buy the software. Can anyone suggest ways that I might informally test the employess knowledge? Some questions that I might ask perhaps. This is the outline for the INTERMEDIATE course: 1. RELATIONSHIPS ? How Relationships Work ? One-to-Many Relationship ? Many-to-Many Relationship ? One-to-One Relationship ? Defining Relationships ? Referential Integrity ? Cascade Update ? Cascade Delete 2. JOIN TYPES ? The Inner Join ? The Left Outer Join ? The Right Outer Join 3. QUERY TYPES ? Select Queries ? Calculated fields in Queries ? Sorting on more than one field ? Parameter Queries ? Crosstab Queries ? Action Queries ? Make-Table Queries ? Delete Queries ? Append Queries ? Update Queries 4. FORMS ? Combo Box (Functions in Forms and Table Lookup Fields) ? Domain Aggregates Functions ? Query by Form (QBF) ? Sub Forms ? Tab Stops ? Enhancing Forms with OLE fields, Hyperlinks, and SubForms ? Changing Label alignments ? Adding Form titles 5. REPORTS ? Report Sections ? Changing Properties ? Printing and Previewing Reports ? Moving and resizing controls ? Using Label and Textbox buttons to add Controls ? Add picture to Report Header area ? Changing size mode of a picture ? Inserting Date and Page Numbers to Reports ? Using Aggregate functions (Sum, Count, ) in Reports 6. Integrating Excel into Access ? Importing an Excel Worksheet to an Access Database ? Linking versus Embedding 7. Web Features ? Creating a Data Access Page ? Previewing the Data Access Page ? Limitations and Functionality In the Advanced course employees will learn the following: 1. OVERVIEW ? Report Design Considerations ? Creating and using Custom Forms ? Indexes ? Lookup and Input Mask Wizard ? Creating and using pivot table forms ? Creating a multi page form using tab control 2. MACROS ? The Macro Window ? Adding Actions and Saving a macro ? Running a macro ? Modifying a macro ? Macro arguments ? Macro group 3. EXPRESSION BUILDER ? IIF function ? Referencing open forms ? Expressions ? Informal testing of Access 97 Skills
David is right, there is nothing advanced about the so-called advanced
course, in fact the topics around database design and queries in the so-called intermediate course will probably be more challenging for many than anything in the so-called advanced course. I'd be somewhat suspicious of any course outline that listed 'Using Table Analyzer' as a topic, as there is really only one thing to be said about using table analyzer - don't, it's completely useless. On the other hand, as someone who used to teach IT courses myself, I know that the preparation of course outlines is often regarded as an unwelcome chore and done in a hurry. The course may turn out to be better than the outline. In your situation I'd let the employees decide which course they want to attend. I don't think there's anything to be gained from quizzing them that would justify the effort. Instead, I'd spend the time asking them what they thought of the course afterward, I suspect that might prove to be a more productive use of the time in the long run. BTW: This is not an Access 97 course. Data Access Pages and Pivot Tables/Charts were both new in Access 2000. -- Brendan Reynolds (MVP) http://brenreyn.blogspot.com The spammers and script-kiddies have succeeded in making it impossible for me to use a real e-mail address in public newsgroups. Thanks Brendan and David. Well now I have a problem don't I? The employees who had requested the course and who had taken the intermmediate were satisfied with the course outline for the Advance. I wonder if it is because it's what they need for their jobs?
I think will talk to the college and the instructor and some expert users here where I work. We pay the college a lot to offer the courses. I don't know if I want a test run on this one. Thanks for your input. It does help a lot. Informal testing of Access 97 Skills
Well, if the employees who have taken the 'intermediate' course are
satisfied, that's a good sign! Like I said, the course may be better than the outline. -- Brendan Reynolds (MVP) http://brenreyn.blogspot.com The spammers and script-kiddies have succeeded in making it impossible for me to use a real e-mail address in public newsgroups. Any e-mail claiming to be from brenreyn at indigo dot ie that is not digitally signed by me with a GlobalSign digital certificate is a forgery and should be deleted without being read. Follow-up questions should in general be posted to the newsgroup, but if you have a good reason to send me e-mail, you'll find a useable e-mail address at the URL above. "Tierney" wrote in message ... Tierney Tierney "Brendan Reynolds" wrote: David is right, there is nothing advanced about the so-called advanced course, in fact the topics around database design and queries in the so-called intermediate course will probably be more challenging for many than anything in the so-called advanced course. "Tierney" wrote in message ... Customizing Reports ? Combining text fields ? Dlookup statement ? If . Then statement ? Referencing open forms ? Sum Function ? Text box Fields ? Yes/No fields 4. ADMINISTERING A DATABASE SYSTEM ? Compacting a Database ? Converting a database to an earlier version ? Using Table Analyzer ? Using the performance Analyzer ? Using the Documenter ? Discussing Startup Options ? Setting passwords ?
