Default Oulook 2007 desktop alert disappeared

After running fine for a couple of years, this morning the desktop alert has
decided to not show up any more. The settings under Tools, options are all
correctly set and haven't been changed. What would cause the alerts to stop
showing up? Restarted Outlook and rebooted PC. No updates or other changes
done since Friday when it worked.
Any ideas?

Do you have Service Pack 2 for Office 2007 installed?

You might try turning off the Desktop Alerts (under tools | options) then
restart Outlook, then turn them back on.
