Default Copying backgrounds

My 2nd graders each made a 2003 PowerPoint slide of themselves at school.
When I went to import them into my 2007 PP presentation at home, the
backgrounds they chose in slide design no longer existed. (For example, one
girl loves acting, so she chose the "curtain call" background.) I have tried
copying the slide and everything copies --- text boxes, font, colors,
animation --- but the background is black. What am I doing wrong?

Default Copying backgrounds

Choose "keep source formatting" after pasting.

Or use Home Tab | New Slide | Reuse Slides and choose the "keep source
formatting" option there.
