cannot open microsoft outlook
PLEASE HELP! I am a windows 2000 user - whenever I try and open microsoft
outlook I get a message that says “microsoft could not open the file containing the folders used to send and receive email messages, creater appointments, and open the address book. Please select from the options listed below: Create a new personal folders file, or Open an existing personal folders file”. Then when I click on “Open an existing personal folders file”, it will not allow me to open my folder (and as I only have one existing personal folders file that is where all my emails are stored!). I have however been able to open a new personal folders file and to continue to work in Outlook, but in a completely new folder . I then tried to import my old existing personal folder file from within Microsoft Outlook but it will not allow me to do this. HELP PLEASE, ANYONE… -- Dan J |

Are there any error messages such as the personal folder file is corrupt, or
Outlook can't find the path to it? Is the PST marked read only? Is the folder the PST is in protected? This apparently worked before, what has changed (even the slightest little thing)? Have you tried to run scanpst.exe against the Outlook PST file? -- Kathleen Orland Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com "Dan J" wrote: PLEASE HELP! Dear K Orland
there are messages that come up when I try to import my original .pst folder.."Cant find this file. Make sure the path and file name are correct". And when I verify that the path and file is correct it gives me "Errors have been detected in the file..." I have not changed any settings and have not seen anything strange with any of my other Office programs that reads Any ideas? -- Dan J "K. I would suggest running scanpst.exe against the PST file. You can find it by
doing a search for the file. Double-click it and follow the instructions, make sure you point it to the correct PST. You don't state what version of Outlook you use and what size the PST is? -- Kathleen Orland Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com "Dan J" wrote: No they are all set as "archive", not as read only. The file size is 201 MB and it is Microsoft Outlook 2000. Is that why its not
opening? Maybe its just too big a file? how do I reduce it? I also ran scanpst.exe and followed your instructions and the programme repaired the files. What do I do now to try and open the repaired file?? Thanx -- Dan J "K. Orland" wrote: I would suggest running scanpst.exe against the PST file. You can find it by doing a search for the file. The Outlook 2000 PST size limit is 2 GB but it can get a little flakey after
1.5 GB in size. To open that PST, try file / open from Outlook and point to that PST. Good luck! Hi Dan,
Add the PST by going into the Mail applet in your control panel. In the properties of your profile you should be able to add another set of personal folders and point that one to the PST you just repaired. Good luck, let me know how it turns out! -- Kathleen Orland Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ http://www.howto-outlook.com/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com "Dan J" wrote: Hi Kathleen and thanks for the help. I tried what you said - to open that PSTfrom Outlook and pointed to that PST and it came back with "Properties for this information service must be defined prior to use". Then when I clicked OK it came back with" File access is denied. You do not permission required to access this file"! Any other ideas? Dan J "K.
