Oriental characters & squares appear when inserting footnotes

Hi

Had a call from a friend today with an odd problem with Word.

When inserting footnotes, lots of squares and oriental characters appear in
the text of the document.

Hoping that someone here might have an idea what would cause this.

Thanks for any info.
