Default problem with PrimoPDF

I downloaded and installed it (to save Publisher files as PDF to show
others who don't have Publisher), and it seems fairly simple, except it's
not showing as a printer.

It says in the manual PrimoPDF installs as a PDF printer.

To create a PDF
1. in the document-authoring programd, select FILEPRINT
2. select PrimoPDF printer from the list of available printers and click OK

I understand this, but I tried it in Publisher and then in Word, and when
print comes up it only shows my Lexmark (default) and Ring Central fax (I
rarely use, but apparently this added itself to printers). When I click
settings- printers, I see the Lexmark as default and Ring Central fax and
"add printer" (but there's nothing in this relating to PrimoPDF)

I even uninstalled it and put it back in again, and restared the computer.

I see a file that says "drivers", but everything else has such clear
directions, seems like if something else is needed it would say so?

What am I missing or not doing with this? I would think PrimoPDF would
set itself with the printers (apparently Ring Central Fax did at one time)

I've never created a PDF document before. I have Serif PagePlus8 PDF
creator, but never did much with it (it looks something like Publisher when
it opens).

Thanks,
Carrie

Okay you installed PrimoPDF?

I know nothing about "Ring Central Fax"
but if you have your document open in
Pub 2000....and go to...File / Print...
Open the...Name...drop window...
you should see all of your printers...
including...PrimoPDF.

Select PrimoPDF / click OK...this
should open the PrimoPDF screen
where you can select a save location
for your file.

It should show but it doesn't. Ring Central fax isn't even involved in
it, just when I used the computer to fax something it set itself with the
printer (but not default) and shows on the menu.

This is where it should say PrimoPDF, right?

I don't know where else, this is what comes up when I click FILE PRINT
with the document open in Publisher (or Word) I'd be saving as PDF.

When it installs it goes into the default location, which is Program
files.

It seemed like it would be so easy. I'm following all the instructions and
doing what it says.

Maybe there's a HELP file about it somewhere. Tomorrow is another day.
I've got several new programs to play with today.

Here's a wild guess; Exit all programs especially your anti-virus program
before attempting to install Primopdf.

Okay, sounds good.

I'll take it out and try again.

But, what if it's my stupid Lexmark printer (which is default and I
want it to be)? Maybe I could take that out and install Prino and put it
back in again after?

Computers are such fun they make our lives so simple and easy and save us
all this time (LOL)

What did I do before I had one.....

I'm sorry Carrie but I've never seen this issue
before. Yes, PrimoPDF should show in the
drop window in your screenshot.

It seems as though the program is not installed
correctly but maybe it's a Lexmark issue, I have
no idea...

Default I found a discussion board

Seems I'm not the only one with this problem (using Win 98 SE)

http://forums.primopdf.com/showthread.php?t=367

I had taken it all out and deleted it, and in the process of downloading it
again, thinking that might be the problem. When I saw the forum. When it
downloads again, I'll try doing it the way someone posted they had, to get
it to work.

Though it involves adding to the registry and installing again, etc. It
seems to be detailed directions that others said worked.

I wanted to put this in (here) in case anyone else has the problem and
puts it in search.

I'll be back with the results...

Okay, I did all it said (first had to set the hidden files because I
couldn't find SYSTEMS (only Systems32 and I knew there was a Systems) copied
the files into that. Then couldn't figure out how to change the reg key,
but decided to be brave (I could always delete the Primo program if I messed
up) and tracked it down. The wording in my reg was slightly different in
places. But I found the driver and changed it to "primomon95.dll"

Reinstalled the program and.... IT WORKS! (I'm excited about it, I never
had a program to change to pdf before.)

I went to copy the instructions here in case someone puts it in search
someday, and noticed the person said it changed another file to the Win XP
one and he had to restore it. I'm still not at the point where I understand
a lot of this, and not sure if this happened with mine or not. Maybe the
primo installation no longer does this.

Hope it's okay to put a quote from another board on here, but wanted it
complete "for the archives".

Thanks for all the help, now I can make pdfs and have new programs (the
serif ones I also downloaded- one for drawing and one for 3D I spent hours
trying to make something useful with last night (LOL) I finally got an
animated 3D, of shapes, but nothing I can think of to do with it. But, it's
fun and never know when it might be useful. A 3D type graphic might be good
for other things, too.

So much to learn and do. At some point it has to come together in some way
(to be of use)
----------------------------------------------------------------
quote from board about putting in PrimoPDF with Win 98 and 98SE

Just a warning, on Win98 the installer overwrites my msvcirt.dll file
with a WinXP version that doesn't work. You may want to back it up first. I
had to restore it with the sfc utility.

1. Install the program normally.

2. Copy the primomon95.dll and primomon.hlp files from the C:\Program
Files\activePDF\PrimoPDF\primomon directory into the C:\Windows\System
directory.

3. Add this entry to the registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro
l\Print\Monitors\PrimoMon]
"Driver"="primomon95.dll"

4. Repeat step 1.

After re-installing, I had a working PrimoPDF printer on both Win98 and
WinME.

I hope the installer gets fixed soon, but this seems to work in the
meantime. Hope this helps.

Default I found a discussion board

I tracked down the answer, it has to do with installing it with Win 98 and
98 SE (which I have) and posted the solution to it, at the bottom of this
thread.

I wouldn't have guessed that was the problem, I'd have thought I did
something wrong or didn't have it downloaded correctly, or something.

Now, if anyone else has the problem with it- though probably not many
still have Win 98, we have the solution. Unless PrimoPDF does something to
change it. Probably not because this is an older Win and everyone is moving
on.

Learn something new everyday. If it wasn't for all the boards and
people helping and sharing, it would be a lot harder...
