Default deleted unread mail folder

I accidentally deleted my "unread mail" folder from favorites. My new mail
would go into that folder (which would then be in bold) and I could read all
my new mail in one place. Since I deleted the folder, all mail goes into its
individual folder or the inbox, and I have to scan hundreds of mail folders
for my new mail. I want my unread mail folder back, and my unread mail to go
in there until it has been opened, after which it "disappears" from the
unread mail folder and goes only into its own specified mail folder.

Did that. But my new unread mail still won't go into "unread mail", for one
place to go and read my new mail "on its way" to its individual folder.......

The Unread Mail folder does not actually hold any messages -- it just points
to the originals in the folders they are actually in. All Search Folders
work this way.

Default deleted unread mail folder

But the Unread Mail Folder does not become bold anymore, allowing me to open
it and view all my new, unread mail, in one place. It's as though the mail
isn't "passing through" the unread mail folder, even temporarily. I know it
doesn't "hold" the messages....

Have you restarted Outlook and/or rebooted your PC since reactivating the
Unread Messages folder?

Yes. And I sent a test email. It went into my inbox which became bold, but my
unread mail folder sits as before, not in bold, pointing to nowhere.

No. The mail is bypassing the Unread mail folder on its way to its
destination folder.

Default deleted unread mail folder

Again, the messages are not really "bypassing" the unread messages
folder...since the UM folder is not a pitstop on the way to anything :-)
The problem is that the messages are not showing up in your UM folder after
they arrive in their destination folders, and they should. UM should give
you a listing, by folder, of any unread messages in those folders (it will
not show folders where there are no unread messages).

At this point I think it's time you ran the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe
-- search for it on your hard drive) against your .PST when Outlook is
closed, to see if it can find and repair any problems in the file. Allow the
program to make a backup copy of your .PST file before it makes any changes.
