Auto Complete Names in "To" Field

If you type David Smith in the "To" field, the auto complete function doesn't
work if his name was stored as Dave Smith. When you do a web search for
David LastName, search engines understand you might also want want Dave.

It would be great if the auto complete for addresses in the "to" field
worked the way search engines do.

You don't understand how autocompletion works. It uses the email address to
which you have sent messages. So it uses the information you provide to the
cache. It is not a search engine.

The autocomplete cache (the names that come up as you type) is not a search
engine, it is a cache of names recently used, just like the web sites stored
in the address bar of a browser or the form fields that store your user
names when you log into web sites.

I don't understand how THIS autocompletion works. It brings up addressess I
have long deleted from my address book and yet an address I use regularly
does not come up and I have to search the address book - why does it bring
up addressess I no longer have or use.

Entries do not leave the cache until you delete them from there or exceed
2000 entries.
If new entries are not appearing, Outlook has stopped writing to your cache.
Autocompletion is not a robust or reliable feature. It frequently stops
working usually because Outlook loses its connection to its autocompletion
cache. This can happen for a number of reasons, most often because Outlook
is not exiting completely and thus not writing to the cache. Make sure you
run no add-ins or sync software that might hold Outlook open after you exit.
After you find and resolve the problem that is preventing Outlook from
exiting properly, you may need to create a new Outlook profile to get
autocompletion to work again. If you're lucky you'll be able to migrate your
old cache to the new profile following directions he
