Default Outlook 2003 in Exchange mode - mailmerge fails

Been using Mailmerge from MS Word 2003 to send newsletter each month.
Database in Access.
Outlook in SMTP - Internet mail mode.

Recently tentatively changed one machine outlook to full exchange mode since
clients want some features only available in full exchange mode.

Attempted to do the usual Mailmerge on Tuesday - nothing happens.
MS Word just sits there - no errors - no emails generated.

Searches reveal the odd comment that Mail merge has changed in Outlook 2003.
It seems we finally have the ability to Mail Merge into an Outloook Contacts
list. Great. But it would be nice to keep the earlier features too.

Is it likely that once you operate Outlook 2003 in Exchange mode that MS
Word Mail merge to email no longer works ?

Would it help to re-install everything ?

outlook with an exchange account (there is only one mode) works the same as
outlook with an internet account.

What did you do to change outlook to 'full exchangemode'? What version of
outlook did you use before? If not outlook 2003, try running fixmapi or do a
detect and repair.

Default Outlook 2003 in Exchange mode - mailmerge fails

Thanks Diane

On Computer A - it was Office 2002 - with outlook in SMTP mode - upgraded
the Outlook only to 2003 [came with SBS]. Switched to Exchange mode a few
weeks ago.

On Computer B - new Office 2003 - everything first time - straight into
Exchange mode.

Are you saying Mailmerge from MS Word should definitely work ?

Maybe I am leaving out a new step at the end.

Normally in WORD it gets to the end of the wizard - click on merge - box
comes up inviting the Subject line to be entered and the selection of all or
a subset of the merge list - then emails are generated into Outlook Outbox.
That no longer happens on the PC set up for full exchange mode.

In order to send out my newsletter I brought the mailmerge doc and database
home and ran it on this PC. Ofiice 2003 with Outlook in SMTP mode.

I can understand the potential for problems on Computer A - upgraded the
Outlook only.

No excuse on a completely fresh system though.

regards

Yes, it should work and no, it doesn't sound like you are leaving out a
step - if you are, it's an early step. It should work identical to how it
worked before. It should work in the OL2003/Word02 version - it would fail
long at the point of adding the contact db if it were not going to work.

How are you starting the merge - from word's mail merge menu or outlook's
tools, mail merge menu?

Default Outlook 2003 in Exchange mode - mailmerge fails

Starting from the Word Mail Merge menu.

Same steps that previously worked equally well in Word 2002 used with
Outlook 2002 in SMTP mode
ditto 2003

I wonder if Outlook 2003 has set a flag to assume we are wanting to merge to
an Outlook contacts list and is ignoring the fact that the DSN is already
set up to the Access Table....

Anyway, if it definitely should work I will do more research.

mail merge should use the source you select...

What mail format are you using? try a test with html. I wonder if the
security dialog is popping up behind something and it's waiting for input.
It shouldn't until later in the process though.

Default Outlook 2003 in Exchange mode - mailmerge fails

Not sure what you mean by what mail format.

The newsletter is a html formatted file named news.htm but created in
MSWORD.

The emails normally generated via mail merge are html emails. Hard to say
what was likely in the faulty systems since no emails were generated.

"Trying to send emails on your behalf"
No there is no dialog box waiting for permission to send emails for one
minute - that is the whole reason for switching to mail merge....
We had a perfectly good newsletter generating system driven from an Access
database. Not practical to give approval to send 800 time.

What I do find odd is that the faulty installation MSWORD forces page breaks
to appear when viewing news.htm. But in the working ones and the emails
generated the correct html format of no page breaks is produced.

Clearly I needed more than 24 hours. eh ......
Thanks for your help.
