Default Cross references across multiple (sub) documents?

Hello,

In Word 2002, I have a master document and say, 5, sub documents.

When I'm editing any of the documents (any of the subs or even in the master, while having the subs collapsed/not merged into the master), is there a way to create a cross reference to another bookmark/heading in any of the other documents?

Also, is there a built-in way (i.e., not programmatical via VBA) that can I have a TOC/Table of ... (Figures, Captions, etc.) that refer to all the subs' heading, figures, captions, etc.

If this can only be done programmatically, can someone help pointing out a discussion/example on how to do this properly? I think in VBA you can cycle through the "Items" array from the parent doct object and access these references that way, but can we do this independent on whether the master doct has the subs collapsed/not?

Thanks in advance for answering.
