Bullets and Numbers

Thanks to all those who answered my last question

I am still learning the ropes and am formatting a large document using
styles. I have set up my group of list bullets for 9 levels (just in case!),
which works great for bullets under my main headings. I am trying to set up
a similar set of list bullets (following the same bullet pattern - e.g. *
*) for bullets under my subheadings, which are slightly indented. Is this
possible, or am I causing more trouble for myself than I need to?

Can you tell us more about what you are trying to achieve?

What might be usual would be something like this:

Vegetables [Heading 1]
.. A bullet point of some kind[List Bullet 1]

Potatoes [Heading 2]
. A bullet point of some kind[List Bullet 2]
Continuation of a bullet point[List Continue 2]

Carrots [Heading 2]
etc etc

Fruit [Heading 1]


Does your document look something like this? And, what version of Word are
you using?

Thanks so much for trying to help. I am using Word 2003 and the document
goes something like this:

Heading 1
- List bullet
List bullet 2
- List bullet 3

Subheading 1
- Sublist bullet
Sublist bullet 2
- Sublist bullet 3

I am wondering if I need a list of Sub-bullets as above if I want to keep
the bullets in that - - pattern and get the right indents. Sorry for not
communicating this very well.

Hi Becca

Now I think I understand what you're after.

If your entire numbering and bulleting scheme is as you describe it (that is
only two levels of heading, each with 3 levels of bullets), then you have 8
levels in all. If this is so, I'd make up one numbering scheme (they can hae
a maximum of 9 levels).

If that's not going to work for you, then you'll need three schemes:
- one for Heading 1, Subheading 1
- one for List bullet , List Bullet 2 etc
- one for Sublist bullet, Sublist bullet 2 etc

Even though you only need 2 or 3 levels per numbering scheme, make sure you
set up all 9 levels. That is, link the level to the appropriate style in the
sequence (even if you don't think you'll ever use Heading 9 or List Bullet
5. Where necessary, link to no style and delete anything in the Number
Format box. It will take an extra minute or two now, but it will help keep
things in order later on.
