Some "working results"

I uninstalled the PC-cillin firewall on Saturday and turned on email
scanning (incoming and outgoing).

On Saturday I turned off the PC and turned it back on and started Outlook a
couple of times. Then today I opened OL upon starting the PC for the first
time today. So far, all initial automatic downloads have completed normally.
Will take another few days of this before I could be confident.

ZILLA - This could be a workable solution if you're willing to buy a router
with a hardware firewall even if you might not otherwise need one! My PCs are
behind a Belkin wireless router and switch, actually with a wired connection
to the router. (Wireless is for laptop access.) Symantec's security check
finds that my PCs are completely "stealth" due to the router's hardware
firewall wtih NAT.

I've used the PC-cillin firewall due largely to a Microsoft security guru's
article a while back saying a software firewall should ALSO be used even if
you have a hardware one. Frankly, given the router's firewall and the stealth
results, I'd stop using the software one in a heart beat if I find that it
eliminates this darn email problem.

Pete,
In this case I feel much more confident then disabling e-mail scanning. I
too have a hardware firewall built into my router. And I also have seen
those articles encouraging both types of firewall.
The only gripe I would have, then, is based on principal. That the product
should provide three levels of protection, (firewall, antivirus and antispam)
but we only get two. I'd sooner do without the antispam.
I informed Trend Micro of our results. Lets see if they have a fix.

Hi ZILLA,

I'm with you 100% on the principle. Sure would be nice to get full
functionality.

For the testing record, today again the first automatic send/receive
completed normally. That makes two "first of day" and a few mid-day power
off/on cycles during which uninstalling the firewall seems to be working.
Very curious, though, that in earlier testing disabling the firewall did not
work. "Disabling" may leave some functionality in place.

I'll also tell Trend Micro of these findings.

Pete
