Fully Document Outlook Live limitations vs Exchange Outlook
For outlook users who have experience working with an Exchange server
backend, moving to Outlook Live (aka Outlook Connector), presents some learning challenges. For example, I have come across the following: 1. There is a 999 character limitation for Outlook Live (No such limitation in Outlook Exchange). 2. You can not create nested folders in Outlook Live (No such limitation in Outlook Exchange). Etc… So far the only public documentation I can find on the subject is on the web page http://join.msn.com/outlook/requirements Where there is a comment: "Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is required for certain advanced functionality in Outlook 2003". Unfortunatly, "Certain advanced functionatliy" could mean diffrent things to diffrent people. It would be very helpful to have a more complete!?!? list of Outlook Live limitations compared to Exchange Outlook. Fully Document Outlook Live limitations vs Exchange Outlook
Outlook live has nothing to do with exchange- it's a mapi connecter that
enables you to view hotmail in outlook -it has more in common with the insight connector for IMAP accounts (http://www.bynari.net/index.php?id=7) than exchange server. If you require Exchange functionality, sign up for a hosted exchange account - they cost about twice MOOL but you can use your own domain name if desired. This bullet point: a.. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is required for certain advanced functionality in Outlook 2003 means what it says - that some advanced features require exchange server. So anyone who previously used Exchange and now uses Outlook live may not have the same advanced capabilities that they are familiar with, but they will have all the basic Outlook features. There is no complete list of differences between Outlook live and exchange, just as there are none between exchange and internet accounts. Any limitations are actually because hotmail can't support the feature - the 999 character limit, the lack of subfolders, the 1000 contact limit, limited support recurring patterns for tasks and appointments are all because hotmail can't handle it, not because outlook live can't or won't. If hotmail removes the limit, outlook live will support those features. Otherwise, you need exchange to store or share more than 1000 contacts, or to create recurring appointments etc. Note that how you got outlook affects the features as much as the account types you use - import/export and some language proofing tools are missing from the version included in Outlook live. If you own the office suite, these features will work with your live account. If you own the pro version of the suite, you'll have a few more features than owners of the standard suite. http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/mool.htm - the KBs listed at the end of the page offer some insight into some of the differences between MOOL and Exchange. -- Diane Poremsky [MVP - Outlook] Author, Teach Yourself Outlook 2003 in 24 Hours Coauthor, OneNote 2003 for Windows (Visual QuickStart Guide) Need Help with Common Tasks? http://www.outlook-tips.net/beginner/ Outlook Tips: http://www.outlook-tips.net/ Outlook & Exchange Solutions Center: http://www.slipstick.com Subscribe to Exchange Messaging Outlook newsletter: "KeithGa" wrote in message ...
