Default Hide my real email address

Using OE6 with xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 installed.

My new ADSL ISP requires that I use my real e-mail address
when I send e-mail through their servers. If I put anything
other than the e-mail address that they've assigned me in
the "E-mail address" field under Tools Accounts
Properties, the server rejects the message.

I've set the "Reply address" field to my public address
) but people who receive e-mails from me
can still see my private (real) address and I'm concerned
that this address may end up in their address books, which
would put it at risk of access to worms, viruses, spammers,
and other vermin.

The server doesn't care what e-email address I log on with
when downloading messages: it just won't let me send
messages with anything but my real one. (A very sensible and
effective security precaution I have to admit.)

Is there some way in OE6 to conceal my private e-mail
address from message recipients but still leave it visible
to the server?

Use the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) feature. In Create Mail, either click
ViewAll Headers and type in the addresses separated by a ;

Or: Click the To button. You will see your list of contacts and the
choice of putting them in the To, CC, or BCC field. Click on an
address, then click BCC to add it. Repeat for all the contacts you
want. (Note: Most ISP's have limits as to how many e-mails you can
send a one time. 25 is common, but it varies).

Some people may have the message blocked if there is no address in
the From field though.

No.

What you put in the E-mail address field on the General tab is what goes in the FROM:
header of the message (that's all OE uses this field for). And that is apparently what
your ISP is insisting be your official e-mail address. The don't want their customers
sending messages with a fake e-mail address.

Each mail and news account has its own setting, so you might be able to use different
e-mail addresses in your news posts. Although I've heard of some ISPs doing the same
checking for news posts to their news servers.
