thanks bruce. when i tried to compact folders while offline, the 'illegal operation' came up and close OE. further help please.

also if i delete folders.dbx, will i lose my address book of email addresses?? will i lose existing deleted files/sent files/inbox files???

You had best wait for another opinion. I don't know any reason that
you would get the Illegal Operation notice. The problem may be
something else than Folders.dbx.

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Disable Background Compacting and frequently perform a manual compact of
*all* OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm#auto and
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
