How to download new email to old outlook data file?

I'm having problems with getting Outlook 2003 to download new messages to my
old .pst file.

I followed the document "Reconnect to your old Outlook data file" found

The problem is, I had messed around trying to make it work before I found
that document, and I may have messed something up.

Here's what's happening. I followed the instructions down to "Customizing
the data file display name," and everything went fine to that point.
However, when I try the "Delivering messages to the previously used .pst
file" part, that's where everything goofs up. I go to my email accounts in
the "View or change existing email accounts" and there is only one option in
"Deliver new email to the following location" --it is the new name I gave my
old data file. So I select it anyway even though it's already selected then
click finish.

My new email doesn't download to my inbox under the new name of my old data
file. Instead it creates a new data file which shows up beneath my old one
and is named whatever that email account is named. So in this case, I have
my old data file named "Tevya's Stuff" up above, then beneath that, another
one called "Main" (the name of the email account) which just has an inbox and
a junk mail beneath it. This is where it downloads my new email. It doesn't
show up as an option as where to download new email to under the "view/change
existing email accounts". There is only one option "Tevya's Stuff."

Also, when I try to close it, it says "This group of folders is associated
with an email account. To remove it, on the Tools menu, click Email
accounts, select View or change existing email accounts, click Next, select
the account, and then click remove." I have tried this and it doesn't remove
the new .pst file from my hard drive, though it does remove the "main" data
file from my Outlook navigation pane. I have tried doing this, then exiting
Outlook and deleting the .pst file that was created for that account. When I
reopen Outlook, there are no email accounts, so I add a new one, and whether
I name it "main" again or a new name it just does the exact same thing...

only one option to download new email to "Tevya's Account."

And I don't know if it's because I've downloaded the messages before or what
but all the ones that download into the "Main" inbox, have a strikethrough on
all the information: the "From", "Subject", "Received" and "Size" --all have
a line through them.

I would just start all over with a new fresh install and follow that
document exactly. Only problem is that when I uninstall and reinstall
Outlook, it remembers my old settings and asks me where the "main" .pst file
is, or even my old .pst if I remove both of them in attempting to get a fresh
install.

Please tell me how to fix this, I hope I have explained it well enough. I
just want my old account to download to my old data file. Perhaps even if
you could just tell me how to uninstall Outlook and remove its "footprint" so
I get a fresh install and can try everything all over again, exactly as the
"Reconnect your old Outlook data file" document says to.

I've tried Microsoft's support options, neither the email nor chat will work
for me. It just says submit again. Which I do, then nothing happens.

Did you exit and restart Outlook after you changed the default delivery =
location? That's a required step.

Yes, I did. If you'll read my post original post. There's only one option
there in the first place. So it should be set to that regardless of wether
or not I closed and restarted Outlook. But, yes, I did that anyway.

Sorry I didn't catch all the details the first time. It sounds like you =
have an IMAP account. If so, mail to that account will be delivered to =
the Inbox for that account, not to the PST file you added. That's simply =
the way IMAP accounts work in Outlook. The instructions in the article =
you cited do not apply. Perhaps your mail provider will allow you to =
access the mailbox as a POP account. If so, remove the IMAP account, add =
the POP account, and you'll have it set up the way you want.=20

Okay, I figured that out just in the time between posting my reply and now
seeing your second reply. thanks so much for your help. I was able to set
it up POP3, but haven't been able to get it to send mail... probably
something I need to figure out with the people who admin that email account
(it's through my school).

It's possible you need to authenticate to your outgoing server.
