Default Unwanted number signs

Hi JC

i'm guessing at some point in its life that cell contained a date ...

to fix it, right mouse click on the cell
choose format / cells
under the number tab, choose text
click on the OK

Let us know how you go.

Cheers

I typed in a cell a string of text which can be seen in the box on top of

the spreadsheet. However, in the cell itself, Excel returns a string of
number sign like "###################################..." The number signs
expand when the column width is expanded.

Can someone tell me what to do to display the text content in the cell?

Thanks!

When I tried to create a sample data file by using edit/move or copy sheet, the problem went away in the new file. Copy and paste it back the original file worked fine. So, I guess it's fixed although I still can't figure out why... Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.
Good night, Julie.

JC

Ususally, changing the cell's format to General will fix this.

Excel has trouble showing long strings when the cell is formatted as text (see
Gord's suggestion).

And when you copied that sheet, excel truncated the long string to 255
characters. That's why the problem went away in the test worksheet.

If the problem recurs, try changing the format from Text to General.
